I have been looking at the comercialy available resin end caps but looking at some pics online some folks don't seem to use any sort of retaining system for them e.g. threaded rod are they just held by friction? any manufacturer recomendations for end caps?.

My only experience is with bayonet rings and bolted down acrylic lid type unless i can get a 110mm bayonet ring.

You can drill them out to fit threaded bar, yes. In my experience, they can hold themselves on quite well.

Just don't use push fit end caps with a piston tank system- dive times will improve dramatically, but it will take a very long time to come back up!

Some systems use the air that is in the pressure hull to push the water out of the ballast tank via an air pump therefore creating a vacuum in the main pressure hull.

This vacuum holds the end caps on and there is no need for rods etc to secure them.

Not my idea of a belt and braces approach but it does work.

I find that with a lot of extruded tubing the internal dimensions can be rather variable. Either out of round, lumps and bumps etc.

I find the larger the sizes are more prone to this, as the tolerance is generally a percentage of the tubing diameter.
It does depend on the manufacturer/supplier, some supply better stuff than others.

Perhaps it's for this reason that most of the ready made WTC's of larger diameter use axial compression of the seals instead of radial compression.

If radial compression is a must, a larger and more compliant o-ring may help, or simply doubling up of o-rings. Other solutions include machining a collar to be bonded in to the tube, or even machining out the tube itself, if you have lathe large enough and sufficient material to enable that course of action.

I'm planning a snort system so no pressure inside i guess i'll put threaded bar in to satisfy concerns the O.D. isn't decided yet untill i have all the bits and see how small i can get away with.

It's all just pawing over plans and sketching at the moment i've got a Revel Mk 22 spitfire on the table at the mo so not much sub building this side of xmas.

MMB (Marks Model Bits) down in Welsh Wales will cast you a set in resin...

Or Paul Holman (Turbulent on here) will make you a set in clear acrylic/lexan on the lathe.
