battleship CRANE
« on: January 19, 2012, 07:52:29 pm »

Could anyone help with some details of a standard Aircraft Lifting Crane, that would have been on a British Battleship please?.My Plans just show an outline of it.I do have some photos of the crane, but I am no good at working out sizes from photos.I know the Standard crane, was made by Stothert and Pitt of Bath but they are long gone.Ideally I am looking for either a plan of one in 1/96th scale, or better yet, some kind of ready made model, cast or fret.I have enquired all sources that I know  MMB, Haynes,Sirmar, etc, with no luck. Can anyone help please?
Many Thanks.

Navsource is a great website to find images of US Naval vessels.

You can not link directly to any photos, but on this page there is a Port Quarter shot  of the stern of the South Dakota showing the crane.

Make note of the links to later period shots of each ship at the top of any specific page.

Hopefully you'll find some referances that will help.

Isn't the crane drawn in detail in one of the "Anatomy of a Ship" books?  I'm thinking about the HMS Hood book I'm sure I've seen a crane drawing in that one.

Hi Mick

Which battleship are you building? It depends which era the ship was built to what crane you need.  If its Warspite or a sister ship, TailUK is correct that you could use the anatomy of the ship books, however I believe the book you require is 'The Battleship Warspite' by Ross Watton which shows the cranes and derricks very clearly.  You might also want to consider the Profile Morskie series which has a vast collection of ships drawings which include all relevant fittings like cranes.
Hope this helps.

Hi Nick b,
The ship I am building is HMS RAMILLIES, in her last guise, around D DAY period.thanks for your suggestion.at the moment I have neither of those books.I was hoping it would be in R A BURTS British Battleships of WW1 & 2 both of which I do have, but found nothing suitable so far.
cheers,

The Anatomy of Ships books will provide line drawings down to the machine guns and anchor windlass.
Just a matter of finding one that covers a ship with a similar crane.

   ITEM FOUND !!
Thanks to all for the various suggestions  "Profile Morskie" on HMS RESOLUTION has come up trumps ! It gives a profile drawing of the correct crane, but in 1/200 scale. All I have to do now is get my brain into gear and scale it up to 1/96th.
Then comes the task of making it. I have tried cheating and trying to buy one from the internet, but despite a VERY long search and requests to manufacturers, no-one makes them in my scale. I hope to make a start over the weekend if er indoors gives me some time off for good behaviour!
 Thanks again,

I developed a 1/96 crane jib for my HMS Sheffield but have not run it as I felt there was no demand. Am I wrong ?
I have photos of the unpainted whole model crane that I can scan  to any interested modellers. This model was made before Digital cameras like a lot of my models so the pics are hard copies.

I hope this is not 'off topic' but I would like to thank John R Haynes for taking the time to write half a page of tips and diagrams on the paperwork with the etched 1/96 scale 12 inch portholes I had ordered and received last week.  This was a detailed guide on how to 'raise' the porthole eyebrows, and was much appreciated.

You just have to increase the drawings 208% then they are scale 1:96..  I am doing a crane for the renown right now, in etch brass.  - at the stage of doing the drawings right now - so you see its not that
impossible to get the items. I have the plans from morskie for the resolution also. the crane seems not that difficult ;-)

Reference to BOBK, please dont think I was in any way running John Haynes down by my remark,he produces some wonderful stuff, and has as promised sent me some photos of the crane he made.what a shame he did not produce it,but as he says the costings now would make it too expensive. I shall continue to use his excellent products,so please accept my apologies if it came across the wrong way?

Mick for your info I have to make a crane for HMS lion (cruiser) but as there are straight and angled jib cranes I was not sure which type
you needed.  Having seen the picture of the angled jib this is the same as I will be building and will be getting it from Deans Marine.
They make one in 1/96 scale for their Swiftsure cruiser in P.E.( Jib only) as all the crane bodies appear to be different
hope this helps

Geoff,
thanks for your reply. I am at this moment drawing out a stencil for my crane, but will certainly go have a look on Deans Marine site.It is definitely the angled jib I need!

There's an excellent Polish warship modelling magazine that prints  3d graphics of
various relevant bits - and one issue included the crane you want.  Enter  Modelarstwo
Okretowe and when it comes up click SKLEP - that's Polish for Shop.   The site displays
every issue they still have, so all you do is  search their covers until you find the one with
the crane on the front page then buy it.

Hi, thanks for that info, but is it not another magazine called "profile Morskie" ? I do have the version of this that I require, for the "Resolution" As with the one you describe it is an excellent source of information.I have now cheated,as what I tried to make came out looking like a pigs ear,so have ordered a brass etched crane jib from Deans Marine. Hopefully they will post it out today, along with quite a few other items I found that exactly suit my model.
Cheers,
Mick

Sorted then.  Just think, if Mr. Postman gets a move on you can look forward to
a weekend building ! The mag I suggested has  plan and side view drawings in 1/50th.
plus 18 3D pics of it from different angles.  The text is in Polish, but it refers to "Rodney"
and "Nelson", so it's probably the right one.

Happy building
