Back in the day Jim, were you
tall enough to see over the top?

Just about Ned, from about the age of 8....was always a tall lanky piece of string. <:(

Age dulls most things but sights of such simple pleasures stays with you a lifetime. :-))

But in middle age it was always nice in a summer to walk up there just for the views out to sea if there were no models sailing and eat ones lunch. beautiful views over the North Sea but one heck of a biting wind in the spring and autumn, with very little shelter unless in the building enclaves next to the lake.

Thought I'd escape it moving over to the west coast, but the last two years have been as cold to me as ever on the east coast. Winds straight from the North Pole via the Irish Sea and over the Lakeland fells, lol. {:-{

I love those raised ponds and agree they look the best for launching and recovering.

If you have a long commute for work then it will sadly take hours each day. A friend of mine lives in Somerset and communtes daily to London and so sets off at awful O'clock in the morning and if the trains are on time etc gets back at 8:30 in the evening so can understand why it is so hard for some people to find time amongst all the real life stuff to model and sail.

I expect some of these chaps in the period photos worked long long days.
I leave for work at 6.30am, and get home about 7pm, yet in just over 3 months I have got half way through planking up my hull, the trick is 10-30 minutes per day, every day, even if it is just fitting 1 rib, a little every day gets there eventually, so even working long hours it is possible.

Hi all, I agree little and often.  I built one model by getting up an hour earlier, during the summer, and because I had to stop at a fixed time, to go to work it made you get on with it.

Hello,

Photo of the Boating Lake at Southport, long since gone from the Park!.
This is where I spent many, many happy hours sailing my "Star" yacht.
Set the sails, push off and run round to the other side of the Lake to catch the boat !!.
Good fun and plenty of exercise !!.

The only thing missing from them all is "sound".

The sound of the steam and diesel engines and the chattering of the children and adults as they happily enjoy themselves in a lovely calming none aggressive hobby.

But we can imagine such things.

And I wonder what happened to some of those beautiful steamers. Surely they all didn't get lost in the sands of time.

The good old days when weed was kept at bay
by the pollution of ic engine oil and fuel.
Now the greenies have sanitized everything
the weed has a perfect habitat  >>:-(
and the duck/goose/swan poo
Is a grand fertilizer.

Some old pictures from our club ponds at Dundee. Mostly yachts at this time with a few free sailing steamers. The pond is virtually unchanged although there are more houses around it.

Some more recent photos. The marblehead and fast electric were sailed across the Tay From Tayport for the club centenary.

The swans were a problem even then lol, and were those 3 guys wearing their kapok life preservers the ones who had sailed across the Tay, or just overly cautious at the pond size.

If the latter, I thought the members at Fleetwood were a rough boisterous lot, but never seen anyone wearing one of those, even in the rescue boat at a regatta, {-) %%

Great thread and good to see so many who're interested in the early models  :-))

Same here except I used to sail mine at Kearsney Abbey near Dover.

I've always been fascinated by Star Yachts and have started putting something together that documents the history of the company - "The History of Star Yachts of Birkenhead."

Here's an early image showing the Star Yacht stand at the 3rd World Scout Jamboree, held in Arrowe Park, in 1929.

No R/C or modern gubbins but they had some really nice boats in those days and I bet they enjoyed themselves every much, if not more, than we do.

there used to be a little old toy and model shop on a back street in Cromer where I lived, the same street in fact that our most famous resident Henry Blogg used to live, and they sold the full Star Range for many years.

Always looked good sat in the window for all to see.

Jim.
That was the rig of the day for the cross Tay event. Provided by the RNR who provided the boat for us on the day. Not normally needed for the pondside although we have had a few members falling in over the years.
A good bit of fun sailing the marblehead through the middle of full size yachts from the Royal Tay Yacht Club. At one point our skipper was heard shouting at a full size yacht "If you don't get out of the way i'm going to ram you". Don't mess with the Navy even the part timers.

Jim

P.S. the swans rarely cause any problems, they are so used to the models they have even swam right through the middle of a fast electric race. :}

Here's the model yacht pond in Woodbridge, Suffolk, I used to live closeby and sailed small boats with my son on the pond. I believe it's been totally refurbished and in good use today

Ah! Yes. The Whitestone Pond.  An aunt of mine lived near there and I sailed the Wavemaster in an earlier post there as well as toboganning on the Heath.
Also sailed on the Round Pond in Kensington Gardens for a number of years.
This thread is bringing back the memories.  :embarrassed:
