TROTAMARES RC version
« on: April 19, 2017, 12:04:39 pm »

Hi all,
Sorry for my bad english, i will try to condivide with you, the construction of the Trotamares (MantuaModel), in the rc version...
This kit does not seem to be compatible for the navigation, but i will try to lighten as much as possible the structure of the boat..

Looks really good so far  O0

Converting a Mantua "static" model to a sailing model is not easy.  Good luck !
Keep us all up to date with your progress please  :-))

I agree with Bob - I bought Trotamares with the intention of motorising it, but decided it would need a complete re-design of the hull structure. I think it may be easier to use the wooden hull to make a plug then a mould for a fibreglass hull.
I wish you luck and will be watching.

Benvenuto a Model Boat mayhem Eupon!

If you manage to convert the model then you will have taught many others how to do it. If you try and cannot, you have at least given us some ideas to try in modifying the kit or using it in other ways.

just out of pure curiosity, I wanted to try in advance the buoyancy of the hull, tracing the LWL, and weighing the model and all that I would have loaded above ... unfortunately I had not taken into account that the ballast was too high and not at the bottom , so everything was too unstable for a precise test, but I will repeat it ..
the next step was to "gut" ordered and keel: first with tongs, then with drill and various accessories, I thinned as much as possible ... and here we can already make a first estimate of the weight: before lightening I had a hull which weighed 455g to which you should add 52g of floor (the reinforcement for the ordinate) that I removed immediately, plus 10g of resin given only outside ... total 517g with original configuration ... at the end of the "weight loss" , I find myself a hull weighing 300g ...

I fixed the propeller shaft case and the motor support, for now only with cyan ..
then I prepared the rudder with its "window" on the aft deck ..

I finally prepared the strips for laying on the bow and stern deck, by executing the caulking with coloring of the edges using a soft pencil...for the engine I chose a 400, I hope it is not too small

test fitting internal elements (electronics) and test in the tank of the height of the LWL ... to my big surprise the LWL is still beautiful high, I used a LiPo battery of 1300, I know small ...
finally I sanded the bridges well to make them ready for teak oil ..
the central bridge is not yet glued

I strip the central bridge using soft pencil on the edges to simulate caulking, and lashed the inner walls, then I started the second plating, mahogany strips of 0.5x5mm...

I completely finished the second mahogany plating and also covered the keel and fore-end;
in the meantime I started to set up some items like seats and tables ..
and then I am finally at the first coat of resin

is now the moment of the deckhouse ... before covering it externally with mahogany always from 0.5mm, I preferred to give the impregnating always mahogany, both outside and inside (even if I exaggerated with the dust seen how dark it came)

knowing that the hull will be almost all painted except for a small stretch of edge, I wanted to have some memories of the beautiful piece of resin and polished wood ...

finished the outer lining of the deckhouse, I made the floor and the console rudder, of the wheelhouse area, then I glued the frames of the glasses that go externally, all then brushed with various coats of transparent water acrylic ...

I have "washed" the hull finally to do the umbrellas, the portholes, and the eyes of cuby for the anchors ... and here a question arises spontaneously: being a navigational model, what solution could I adopt for the eyes of cubia so that do you come in with water?
in fact, the portholes will have a brass frame with transparent plastic glass to close ... for the cubic eye the brass frame will host the anchors ...
