Hi, you may have already addressed this but I see there's 3 brass PCB stand-offs holding the motor plates from the base-plate. Will they be enough to resist the gear cogs from riding over each other under heavy load?  Thinking also reading brushless motors just pull hard under load / stall unlike brushed motors.  Maybe I missed something. Sure you already thought of it.

The Brass pillars are very robust not lickle ones.  :-))

An impressive build, I learned a lot from the installation of the thrusters - thank you
Thank you.
My other thread shows the first one I did following advice from member Tug Kenny R.I.P.
A more common Raboesch thruster.

Hi Andy,

I'm enjoying another excellent build of yours, such an impressive build.

Also, can I ask, do you worry about deck cambers (correct phrase?) when building your tugs? It's something that I'm kicking about in the back of my mind as I get near to that stage on my tug ~ does it really matter etc.  :-) ...

Regards Ant.

Glad you like it Ant.
I'm assuming you mean a curve in the deck from centre to edges? No I don't put a camber in.

Currently fitting deck parts now.

I always said if I built another tug the deck would be 100% Paxolin. No cracking or water absorption whether painted or not.

Fitting the aft deck outer sections. I've not decided on my hatches yet.

Committed myself to a stern roller. I've just ordered a 30mm diameter Acetal bar to machine this from.

Thank you Martin, myself and Butts are making our own creations from this hull. This is more fun being creative rather than trying to be exact

I've only built Portgarth I don't count kits.
If you read my Portgarth blog you will get the warts and all. It was hard work as a beginner.

Yes but these are far far too big for a Portgarth  %%  Also I would not put such expensive items in such a poor quality hull.

Take a look at the Aeronaut Jonny harbour tug

Fore and side decks now fixed in place. Some progress on the stern roller.

Happy I secured more of these discontinued Robbe double cross bollards  :-))  Krick took Robbe over but unfortunately seem to have dropped many items.
These can be threaded 5mm if so desired and pretty unbreakable or stronger than most peoples decks  {-)

Thank you C3-PO for finding them for me  :-))

Two Proxxon machines made the job so much quicker.

With which I removed the top of the moulding ready for lining the bulwarks with styrene sheet.

I'm now experimenting with the effectiveness of Stixall on roughened styrene. If this is successful I will be using it instead of epoxy for this task.

I'm satisfied that this adhesive has enough grab on roughened styrene so I've started fitting the skin in 1.5mm card.
A template is essential for stern corners and will do both sides.
A trip to modelshopleeds tomorrow to stock up.

Good morning  :-)

I'm pleased with the results and will finish the lining today ready for trimming the height and fitting Gunwales to tomorrow.
This is not as quick as using epoxy but at £5.95 a tube it's worth the setting time.

This is all a variation of a method given to me by Chipchase/ Brian during my Portgarth build.
The difference here is using materials that need no water proofing and no P38 is used at all.

My test piece of two styrene sheets overlapped.

Outcome. Isopropanol is a must for cleaning off!

Thanks for the compliments Chris. I love to experiment and I'd hazard a guess that no one has used Paxolin as a complete deck let alone deck parts before, except maybe me  :-)

I spent £62 on styrene at MSL today, nearly fell off my trolley  {-)

The lathe will get some hammer with this build and my first real test at building superstructures from plastic  :-)

No more pics today but almost finished skinning and hope to grind the bulwarks way dow to correct heights tomorrow.

Second thoughts! I don't like posting without pictures.

Hopefully my bar stock will arrive tomorrow to continue the roller

The bollards need trimming to size to more closely resemble those on the not really a Stevns Arctic  {-)

Original.

Let me know if you want yours adjusting Butts?

Hi,

You are following on well trodden footsteps using polystyrene sheet sheathing inside bulwarks.  I remember several Model Boats Slipway build reviews over the years often doing it this way -choice of adhesive is always personal I guess.  I don't use the big tubes for models myself because I just can't get through even half of them before they inevitably go solid.

For Paxolin for decks I guess it's personal choice as allot of people will build in the camber and shear at this scale whcih is not so easy with this material.  I don't actually like the smell of cut Paxolin, nor the fine dust.  Actually for a couple of years I worked for someone who built control panels but insisted on PE sheet as he hated Paxolin (it was a bit daft there to be honest).  Use of glass fibre sheet however or even copperclad seems quite common in Europe and certainly in commercial models for building so no invention there I'm afraid*.  It's just usually a bit more expensive, not so nice to cut or bond so no wonder traditional polystyrene or thin PLY rules really.

....I know what you're saying about styrene strip though!  I get as much of mine as I can from the local shop in Dingwall before I resort to mail order.  Regardless of either options it's amazing how quick the £40 mark is reached.  Much like Tesco these days!  But you should be thnkful not to be in mainland Europe -every pack of polystyrene sheet or strip I buy when I'm back in France seems 50-100% more expensive.  I guess it might just be the Paris effect.

*I imagine you might be the kind of person who would take to it quite well, particulary for superstructures.

....That drill certainly gives an impression of size!  That hull will shift some water when it's moving.

Brian fits the styrene skin first and back fills behind it with P38 before fitting deck supports, then the deck then a styrene skin on the deck.
This worked great for me on the Portgarth but a ply deck was a mistake as no matter how careful water will affect it at some time for the worse.

I'm working in a vey different way with this by doing first deck supports then deck then bulwark skin and not an ounce of resin or a wiff of P38.  :-)  Much less materials used and far cheaper.

I cut the Paxolin outdoors so the smell is blown away along with any dust  :-))
