Repairing my old Midwest Lobster Boat
« on: April 07, 2019, 09:08:31 pm »

After 29 years  Susie B now needs some urgent attention. After running for over 1 hour today I noticed water dripping from the hull on close inspection the ply  hull sheets had sprung from the keel. I now intend to let the hull dry out then rub down the hull  and re glass fibre the outside  and inside the hull. Work on the inside of the hull will mean a lot of planking will have to be removed to allow glass fibre to be fitted. Pictures to follow.

Fully sympathise with you Stan. I just had the same problem with my warship. The area concerned is totally inaccessible so I'm having to cut a couple of panels in the foredeck to get at the inside.

Good luck with the repairs  :-)

As Capt Podge says ..

"I'm having to cut a couple of panels in the foredeck" ...... well Ray as you well know, a Warship entering Drydock may well have a few plates removed........all part of the refit :-))

My heart goes out to you chap. My Orca is now laid up on dry land, due to leaks I was finally unable to cure without some fairly brutal repair work. I even considered a new lower hull as an option, instead, I am holding out for 'a bigger boat'!

When I was working one of the lad's was on the Ark Royal (the old one) and he said that when she went in for an engine refit they had to cut out a section from the flight deck down into the engine deck, as that was the only way they could get the old engine out.

HI Guys called at my local car shop this morning bought some resin  then on to my local model shop. Spent a fortune buying resin brushes timber, saw blades, and wood glue. I then called at my local timber yard and bought some paint stripper. Hopefully some pictures this week his week when sections are cut out.

You're spot on there Derek - never thought I'd be doing that with a model boat though  %%

Four pictures showing surgery needed to allow glass fibre to be installed inside the hull. Once this is complete a new ply deck will be fitted then re planked  and weathered. The hull outside will need attention not sure what action will be needed then a total repaint job. More pictures to follow.

Stripping off the hull paint now to allow the glass fibre to adhere to the wood better. I am going to make a new rudder also the last one has done 29 years  and its looking a little tatty.

Nice work!
Paint stripper rather than sanding?
Certainly lifted the original paint.

Yes all the paint is off glass fibre fitted to internal hull parts. Motor cleaned tested and refitted new voltage regulator installed  for lighting. Next week hull will be sanded and glass fibre matting applied  then a new paint job. More pictures this evening.

I've found a seller of the 30" like yours. I thought it was discontinued however I will visit the shop while on holiday in London and check it in person.

Was it covered in glass when you first built it Stan ?
The last incarnation by Midwest included glass cloth in the kit

Two layers, if I remember correctly. What a superb kit that was - in all respects. Eat your heart out, Dumas!
