Just finished rubbing down first coat of glass fibre matting not happy with results. Made a trip to a glass fibre wholesaler this morning and bought some tools glass matting and various other items saved a fortune.

Just three pictures showing the first cote of glass fibre rubbed down not happy with the finish and the last two hull cleaned up ready for second cote of glass fibre.  The professionals gave me lots of tips this morning and for a small outlay  the right tools for the job. No more car shops to buy materials.

If you have to put on a skim of filler to get your final finish, may I suggest something called Dolphin Glaze. It is a fairly low viscosity two part filler, which skims beautifully with a suitable applicator. Gives a surface finish that lacks the usual lumpiness of normal tinned fillers, easing final rub down. Also very good on Steampunk Robots so I hear!

Second coat of glass fibre applied. Next pictures will show hull painted in colours applied way back in 1990. The boot topping will be red vinyl this was applied to the original build.

Rudder servo now fitted and working pictures to follow. Have tried numerous servo tapes to fix the servo all gone in the bin  a waste of time. Gone back to quality tapes used in the construction industry a winner every time .

Question for you Stan. Do you think it might be possible to fit a motor with a straight coupler rather than UJ? maybe by adjusting shaft length and brushless motor.

HI Andy the bulkhead the motor is fitted to is vertical so some modifications would have to be made  to fit a straight coupling and brushless motor. Many years ago I was given a brushless motor to try in my model  it proved to be way to fast and it created a lot of vibration. So I went back to a brushed motor that motor is now in the bin after 29 years service it fell apart. A new brushed motor has been installed  during the refit. But I see no reason why you should not be able to fit modern motors with a little modification. I have to try and rebuild mine with what was available 29 years ago.

HI Andy the area under the cabin roof is large see my last pictures. The space under the wheel  house is  not so good  very shallow pictures on this thread show this  hope this helps.

Stan,
Been watching your repairs on the lobster boat. Coming along very nicely. The original was very well done with all appropriate details. From the original, one might have thought you were a “down Mainer”. Presumably you will incorporate same details in the rebuild? I have this model as well as a current era hull.

Jim,
Thanks for your thoughts. I understand kv/voltage. I guess what escapes me at some level is the advantage of brushless/brushed. Since I have no one else in my area who builds model boats I do not run my boats enough to wear out the brushes. My current era lobster boat has a brushless inrunner designed for racing. It is OVERLY quick & will flip if I am not careful. Some day I will replace the inrunner with a lower kv outrunner to make it more scale speed. A few of us in years past got together in Maine to race the models as part of the real lobster boat races. Unfortunately the model races no longer occur.

HI Guys please can you not turn my post into a debate about brushless motors. I started this thread to show what could be done to repair a very special model to me.

Happy to leave the comments about B/less motors but no more please. We have to remember when I built my model all that you get were brushed motors. But things have moved on so why not fit more modern items in your build. I wish to restore mine to its 1990 configuration  this is what people remember this model for. Good Luck with you build Andy.
