This afternoon I have applied the first cote of gloss varnish to the hull hand rails further cotes will be needed to get a good gloss finish. Other pictures show the fancy scroll work which is made from laminated teak then cut to shape and sanded to the profile. Finally the three large clamps which are holding down laminated teak this will become the stern name plate.

Nice work so far. Isn't teak just the best wood to work with? I just love the stuff, it is stable, cuts and sands beautifully, and I hoard every bit I can get hold of! Also, varnished, much nicer than that nasty old mahogany %)

Yes the teak is a far better looking wood than mahogany The kit version is all mahogany but the full size vessel is finished with a teak finish. I purchased the teak veneer from a company in Bristol not cheap but well worth it.

Today the sun was shining very pleasant so most of the day was spent model building. I started to fit the upper hand rails quite a fiddly job just managed one side. Name plate fastened on the stern  and just some general shots of the hull.

After many conversations about this model being too heavy, I was worried about the weight of detailing the cabin area affecting how this would sit in the water. A bath test this morning with the drive battery fitted proved I had no need to worry everything looks fine. The remaining items that need to be fitted are very light and should pose no problems. In view of my findings the problems expressed about weight can be overcome firstly by drilling 10mm holes in the deck supports making the fly bridge furniture from plastic card and the dinghy from balsa. All the interior furniture is made from plastic card and most of the cabin constructed from lite ply. I have done nothing inside the hull other than fit all the running gear and electronics.  There is no need to grind out the hull interior to reduce weight. Fit B/Less motors not big heavy brushed type motors The battery could be a lipo or Nimh. Just three pictures showing how the model sits in the bath and one aerial shot. Forgot to mention the pencil lines on the stern show the water line position the yellow tape is the location of the rear platform. This kit is heavy but with simple modifications and material changes  problem solved

Hi all the model is now back in the workshop. The next stages of the build are quite time consuming so pictures will be a little slow in being posted more to follow.

I know your model has a much higher level of detail than mine Stan, but I found that the displacement of the hull could cope with quite a lot of weight. I use a 6v 12A/h SLA battery in mine, plus two motors and the obligatory ESC, and she sits on the waterline perfectly. She also has a very realistic turn of speed and is very manoeuvrable with her twin rudders.

After a lazy morning I decided to do some more work on G/Banks. All the top rail supports are now fitted the rails just need a few coats of gloss varnish. Also this afternoon marked out the position of the rear platform and did a dry test fit.
