So being dragged through shops yesterday, one of these was one with just rows and rows of various nail varnish colours, Would these be any good for models as I assume they are tough and waterproof and seem to be much bigger than your average standard model pain tins ?.

Nail varnish tends to be quite brittle and I am not sure about their being that full. I had a look and found the 'average capacity to be 5oz or 15ml. I think standard Humbrol and Sovereign (Ex White Ensign) and Revell tinlets are 18ml.


If you can fins a a way to improve it's staying power then maybe it would be good for certain applications especially as there are primary colours and less vibrant colours out there for nail art effects.

I suggested this to my wife - she said that many nail varnishes now are shellac gel based and are not suitable for modelling.  I have no idea what this means but I thought that I would share her thoughts on this.

The old trick of putting nail varnish around the H.T coil on the telly to quiet it down and stop it vibrating was one of the best things I have ever known nail varnish to be used for - it used to stop the coil from vibrating.

Nail polish remover is good for removing parts attached with super glue.

Beware some nail polish removers, not just straight Acetone anymore. Many have oils in them  to "Nourish" madams cuticles.

It might be that many now seem to be UV cured for hardening. Do they not tend to be translucent colurs rather than solid colours? Best uses are probably for coloured lights such as navigation lights.

Hubby.......Stav uses My nail varnish on his fishing flies to waterproof them !!!!!!!!

I have used nail polish on small bits of my railway set (yes I do get out of the water sometimes) and it works well, and you can find GWR colours    plus we are lucky over here you can buy pure acetone in the supermarkets (next isle to the bread and dishwashers

Nail varnish remover in its pure pre cuticle bothering era is Acetone and should be available to buy as a solvent. Did you know that in the process of dealing with protein and fats, the body produces Acetone during Ketosis.

Further to this thread, I was in Squires Modes and Hobbies and see they do sell bottles of Acetone, as do most GRP and Resin suppliers in varying quantities..
