"Geraldine-R-III" Australian fish trawler
« on: March 07, 2024, 11:08:39 pm »

Hi there , Model No.40  this model is off the plans ( supplied by Joe McGettigan) of a couple of the last larger trawlers built at Bob McLaren's Boat Yard Ballina , the "Giuseppa" & "Francesca" , ( a combination of both) the model is 1:16 scale = 58.5 inch's. The keel, stem & deadwood sections made from Colonial Teak, this section of teak came out of the base of the cold rooms in the "Debrene-Adele" after 9 years we removed the teak foundation prior to re insulating the base of the cold rooms. First photo starting to rip the timbers up for the builds , all sections glued and doweled , the keel, deadwood & stem came in at 1.8 Kg. Cheers  :-)) .

Hi There, these shots attaching the stringers , cheated this time instead of slotting the tail end of the stringers into the transom ,made the transom in 2 pieces. Cheers ,  :-)) .

Hi There,  Starting on the ribbing, made jigs up ( for both models) for the ribs after steaming, some have probably noticed the optical illusion ( if I can call it that ?) that between each frame looks like the hull has flat spots due to the fillers been placed over the stringers on each frame....Cheers  :-)) ....

That turned out great!
How long do you steam the timber for, and how long do you leave them in the jig?

Hi Steve, with those beech ribs probably around 20 min, some of the earlier ribs set in the jig for an hour or so then cramped in position and next day attached properly........These next photo's of her being planked to the deck level..Cheers  :-)) .

Fantastic work Brian that boat is a beast  %%   I think and your mates will have to lift that one into the water but its going to look great when she sails.

When you marked out the rabbet on the stem did you use French curves for the job?  Its something that I find difficult to do accurately.

Hi Mark, yes I use the French curves all the time, she will be going in the trolley this one, to heavy to lift around  O0 .With these next photo's are, after sanding the hull she was given a coat of wood preserver , then her 1st undercoat, fitting the base for the Colonial teak forward bollard post, then extra blocks placed in position for the aft trawl gantries , then showing the lift out deck sections.  Cheers . :-)) .

Hi There, next setting up the shaft lines for the twin screws, has been awhile since setting up a twin screw model 1st one was back in 1991 with the "Imara" model tug kit . made the bosh's for the support brackets from brass tube & .357 mag shell bases installed both ends, the brass feet plates for the support arms were secured to the hull and deadwood area, using plenty of wet rags so as not to burn the model while trying to solder everything in the right shape, and even though some of those solder joints look a bit dodgy, finally did achieve solid strong joints....Cheers .  :-)) .......

Hi there , Well gave my Dremel another work out on the rudders for both models, all cut from 3 mm brass plate, with this model having three rudders the two out slightly smaller than the center rudder. The base brackets for the outer rudders were slotted ( drilled) into the keel side plates and soldered ( hopefully should be strong enough), and the tiller arms were cut from 2mm brass plate. Cheers ,  :-)) .

Hi there, The hull undercoated ,then the start on the w-house section, the front section on the raise deck is as we call it a forward step up w-house, the plans I have of  this w-house is similar to the vessels I was building this model to but the corner windows just wasn't going to cut it  >:-o so had to do a bit of bodging by lengthening the front corners longer which then in turn changed the position of the side slide doors ,which in turn I had to lengthen the raise deck ????,,,Cheers,  :-))

Brian your carpentry is just outstanding  :-))   The scarf joints in the planking, the accuracy of the wheelhouse - it just inspires me mate.  Never mind the fact that at this scale the bending of anything is difficult to keep it flat on the frames.

Hi There, Showing the raise deck extension I mentioned earlier to accommodate the side doors. decided to install a stern towing bollard made from Colonial Teak, used Merbau as the filler under deck between the deck beams and also at the base for the bollard to slot into ( it won't move in a hurry). The stern trawl gantries were made from Merbau and Colonial teak the gantry legs etc were slotted into the feet pads all joints were glued and doweled,Cheers  :-)) .
