Build a 3D Printer
« on: January 15, 2015, 05:55:15 pm »

I saw an advert on TV for a Magazine doing a weekly part to enable building your own one.
Time its finished it will be out of date.

Anyone interetsed in a getting into 3d printing on a smaller budget should seriously consider this one.

I would be very interested to hear your views on this.  It seems mighty cheap, but maybe the resolution is poor?

So, could this be used to 'print' all those cowl vents, ammo boxes, W/T doors etc, that we all spend so long fabricating? If so, this is a revolution!!

Looks similar to ones on demo at Dortmund Intermodellbau last year. The resolution was not very fine. The chess pieces produced as samples had stepped sides on the curves. From memory I would say the step was 1/3 to 1/2 a millimetre. Also they were incredibly slow, like watching paint dry. If anyone gets one a full review would be very nice.

printing precision is how accurately the head can return to the same position in a horizontal plane.
It is not layer thickness, which seems to be conspicuous by its absense.

3d Printing will be very much more affordable and viable by the end of 2015.
The current offerings are very good but the jumps they have made in capability in the past 12 moths have been huge.

By the end of 2015 I think the average person will be able to buy a very precise and efficient 3D printer for under £400.

For modellers like ourselves it could be very much a time saving revolution. With a community like Mayhem freely sharing files for printing due to the nice type of people we are it will also help new and less experienced modellers as well as those with less time to have much more detailed models without the heartache.

There is always going to be those who wish to build from scratch or will prefer items moulded in other ways but I see 3D printing in scale modeling really taking off.

the hardware side of things is just the same as an inkjet printer plus the printing nozzle, then a vertical step adjustment for the layering.

Keep in mind that building a printer is a hobby in itself.

I am really horrible with CAD, so I would probably spend more time
draughting the part in the computer than I would actually building the master.
Casting can make all the parts you need once the master is cleaned up and molded.
The resolution on the printer will have a direct relation to how much time will be
needed to sand and prime a part also. That clean up time can range from an hour, to
a couple days sanding and priming to get a nice usable part.
