ARUN LIFEBOAT
« on: May 27, 2008, 06:59:00 pm »

I have just received the Arun this morning from Models By Design, 1/12 scale and its huge! Excellent fibre glass moulded hull, deck joined and wheelhouse, if anyone as attempted one of these any help as to sourcing fittings, stanchions etc would be most appreciated.

Its based on the 52ft so 52 inch in length and about 16 inch in width at the widest point.  O0

Now do you want the bad news...

The hull's the wrong shape at the stern - the real hull has semi-tunnels moulded in and the model hasn't. I modified mine by cutting a lot of the bottom of the hull out (scary...) and putting them in.

First pic shows the difference on the transom between what you get and what should be there, the second shows my remodelled version.

Lance

(P.S. this is for anoraks only - you can't generally see the bottom of the hull in the water  :) )

if you build your arun as the prototype 52-02 Sir William Arnold you won't have to change as she didn't have noticable tunnels.

That is true but Russ would have to build a new wheelhouse. The wheelhouse that is with this boat is of the GRP type and was only used on 3 52' Aruns 52-08 52-09 52-10

that is true, Johno. and which would be easier, building a new superstructure or putting tunnels into his existing hull.By the way, which superstructure do you mean there were 3 built with.the 52-02 was unique and the only one of her type. don't know about the grp one in the Models by design boat though.cheers,neil.

Hi Neil at the end of the day its about building the model you want. As for the wheelhouse 52-01 52-02 and 54-03 all as far as I know have unique wheelhouses the GRP wheelhouse was used from 54-04 to 52-10 from 52-11 to 52-46 they all had the flat pannel aluminium wheelhouse.

It's similar to the rounded GRP ones (I think that's what it's made of) - it's not identical though.

(and it's 54-03...)

I made a start on the superstructure this week, built up the upper wheelhouse, cut the windows out and give her two coats of primer and up to now she has three coats of Orange, window frames from Macsmouldings have been primed ready for top coat.

I think i might need some assistance with measuring the exit holes for the propshafts, does anyone have any measurement, templates etc?  I have opted for the MFA 850 running on 12 volt with industrial type in-line couplers which are three times the strength of an ordinary coupling.

Thanks
