Drive needed for the radar
« on: August 03, 2006, 02:57:00 pm »

My radar is installed but I lack the motor to make it move.  I have tried to modify an old servo (running on 1.5v which gives me the slow speed) but it is cumbersome and could prove to be unreliable! :o
I have seen radar/scanner motors on ebay some time ago but there are none on there now, which is sods law!
Does anyone know anywhere I can find what I am looking for, or are there any tips out there on using/adapting any other motor to do the same job?

Any advice appreciated  :)

How about the vibrate motor out of an old mobile phone - this should be fairly compact and easily hidden

Most small motors run at aboout 3000 rpm.  Do you have a means of slowing it down?  If not,  I made up an inexpensive speed control for mine to drop the revs way below runspeed.  Personally, I used a motor from the tape winder on a cassette answering machine that I scabbed from the garbage, literally.

I just came across a tiny motor from a mustache trimmer that was supposed to run at 1.5 volts.  The whole motor is about 7/16 inch diameter and about 1/2 inch in length and again was garbage bound, were it not for quick fingers and an alert mind.  If you want the speed control diagram, email me at  [email protected]

Thanks for your offer crazy yank, but i have purchases a motor with gear reduction for £7 delivered!  The set up puts out a radar perfect 15 rpm.  Thant'll do for me  ;)

Just a line to say - there are sites on the web which supply items for the budding robot builder which contain small motors, recently i bought ten mobile phone vibrator motors, one problem with these is     1) is to remove the mass weight and 2) to connect them to a suitable shaft as the diameter is very very small oh and short, some form of belt / friction drive may work, but the friction needed to stop the motor is very little, generally the tape deck motors being offered on most sites are the best compromise.

here is a picture of the motor complete with mass.

Anyone noticed that the banners are missing from the top of the site - or is it just my PC ?

It must be the spam killer on my pc removing the banners, just installed McAfee,  :-\  DickyD

Chromedome, this is a picture of the motors i mentioned earlier, motors from mobile phones, they are not very good for driving props etc, i think as they dont take much to stop, but might be good enough for driving radar etc providing they are made direct drive, i am going to try them on 1/72nd helicopters.

Hi, A standard Futaba 148 servo does the job on my Smit Nederland tug no problem. Hope that helps other builders.
Cheers Glyn ;D

I found a shop via the net in Canberra that supplies small motors for radar units with a 3 inch shaft , and the shaft is 1/8 inch in dia, they turn at 16 tuns per minute, they are 1/2 inch in diameter and just less than an inch long, and power usage is not much worse than leds...

was at Blackpool the other week at the model show and picked up a radar controller with motor and a few spare motors made by JJC (the controller).
the motors are extreemly small aprox10mm x10mm round and a 5mm shaft ,all the wire in the kit to get you turning . ;D
