I see its on the 29th of May But where is Wicksteed and how far is it from Lynn? (Is there a post code to set up my GPS) Even more important is where do they sail ? A square rigger needs room to ware and tack and all my boats need between 8" to 12" of water just to float! Can I get the car close to the Lake/Pond or Pool to unload?

Had a look at the lake at Wicksteed this morning... It's a long walk fron the parking area or are we allowed to cross the R/R line and unload at the lake??? or do they have some trollys???

Model Ships are always worth building and looking at, Be it the roughly shaped lump of wood with a leaf for a sail that some youngster sails in a puddle, to a highly sophisticated all singing and dancing model costing Thousands of Pounds ,,,Somebody loves it and took the time and trouble to build it

AS For Mine You don't want to see them close up..

they get sailed 2 or 3 times a week in all weathers and are looking a bit weather-beaten and battered like the hard working ships they are-

-- Between the normal wear and tear of sailing and the knocks and bumps of loading and unloading they are not pretty little sailing ships with dainty fittings --- but are banged up old sailors that have seen a hard life

The above 4 photos of "Wyvern" topsail Schooner were posted because of the several requests I have received asking about the rig used to tack the overlapping jib...
These are early photos when she still had a raised main hatch, she, has since been modified and the hatch is now flush with the deck but the sail control is unchanged (I like my controls on deck where I can get at them)
Control is by 2 quarter power servos mounted on the underside of the hatch with the sail arm's exposed on deck,--- The after servo controls the main & fore sails it is a single arm servo mounted on the centre line and is connected directly to the fore and main booms (a bowser on the booms allowes the sheets to be adjusted)
Control to the Staysail and the Jib is via a double arm servo (this allows a push me, pull you sheet arrangement) the Stay sail is boomed and the sheets Port & Starb'd are attached to the sail arm.... The Jib sheets are run the same way except, because of the extra length of sheet needed a 2 fold Dutchmans Purchase is used (Sheet runs from the clew of the sail to the arm then forward through a block or eye back to the arm then back forward and is made fast with a bowser ... this rig gives you 3 times as much movement and allows you to use an overlapping Jib...

can you tell how much torque your jib servo has ? i`m using a double purchase loop on my jibs whith a free running clew and i already get troubles with having a lot of drag (2 loops f1 for jib and one for flying jib) and stalling the servo when sailing in high winds (the servo also controls the foremast square sails on my Brig)

i`m definitely contempating a seperate jib servo for my next ship !

You can get Servos with a 17kg pull and metal gears that are the same size as a normal servo But a lot more powerful ...a mail order company here in England sells them (www.howesmodels.co.uk UK phone number 01865 848000 ( for international try 0044 1865 848000) They are closed on Wednesdays & Sundays ...Price in UK is £15.00 used to be £29.00 but has gone down lately .....I don't know how much that would be in your currency......... With the small size models you build 1 or 2 of these should eat the job

Hi Jimmy James,

I like the way the servo sail control arms blend into the deck clutter so as you have to really look to spot them.

This system of sail control has always bothered me as spoiling the look of an otherwise fine vessel but you have carried it off admirably

.. I allways disliked Leads and rope work hidden down below where a snagged or broken sheet can spoil a days sailing ..

.on real ships they are always to hand and anyway

)from 6 feet away you can't see them... I build my ships to sail the way any good seaman would do it ---Simple and straight forward...Aboard ship, in my experance fancy complicated rigg's go wrong and kill people and or wreck ships.

The answer is that the guns are all mounted on a false section of decking that lifts off to allow ease of reloading ...this is something new that I am trying out and is still very much in the prototype stage... If you are going to Wicksteed I hope to be there on the Saterday and will have two or three vessels with me

Proof of a Buccaneering Raid on hapless shipping in the Norwich lake ... Where was the Navy???...

This is Believed to the Flag Ship of a Privateering Flotilla of some 6 or 7 vessels believed to be based somewhere on the East Angilan coast... Two of these vessels along with a Steam Iron Clad are thought to be the vessels used in the raid on shipping at Wicksteed park last week

Please advise on any sightings of these vessels
