where to get an open hull launch
« on: October 04, 2008, 06:46:53 pm »

I'm looking for an open hull boat for my next project to put a Monahan boiler and engine in. Anyone know where to get one? Monahan's stuff is just too beautiful to hide in a hull and would be a sin to do so.

Actually I found some krick kits that seem to be nice.
Also ran across a kit by krick called the Sirius.

Anyone know about prototype of this boat and if it ever ran on steam at one time? This particular one doesn't have a stack so obviously it doesn't have a boiler but I'm wondering if there is a steam cutter like it and if anyone knows where I might find pictures.

Hi

The Krick Victoria is suitable.   I have one with a Gemini outfit in it.   If you want to start with just a hull I'd suggest at  the Kingston Mouldings website www.kingstonmouldings.co.uk/ and in particular the Thames launch Duncan.   It's on my list for building at some stage now I have an engine for my Wideawake and the second Gemini is not going to be used for that.

Cheers

Guy has just about got it there.  The Krick Victoria probably about one of the most popular steam driven launches with possibly the Krick Borkum a close second:

I would also have a look at ready made hulls from the likes of Kingston Mouldings who do a large range of beautifully finished fibre glass hulls for you to make what you want with them.

Hi Everyone,

Oiler, thank you for you kind compliments. If you a thinking of using one of our Vertical boilers I would like to point something out before you buy a hull. The Belmont and Cambria Vertical boilers both share the same main pressure vessel. The main pressure vessel on these boilers are about the same height as the main pressure vessels on the Cheddar Puffin Vertical boilers. The diameter of the Belmont/Cambria boilers is a little bit larger though. I believe the Puffin boilers are about 3 1/2" in diameter and the Belmont is 3 3/4" in diameter. The internal components in both the Belmont and Cambria Verticals are a bit more complex than the Puffins are, so this adds a bit more weight to them as well as the extra water capacity will.

I have a Krick Victoria that I am in the early stages of building which will have a Heron Vertical steam plant installed in it, but I am not building it like the kit intends you too. I have moved the steam plant more towards the center of the hull. Although the Heron Vertical fits really well in the model Victoria's intended location which is farther forward towards the bow, I feel it might be too heavy mounted in this location requiring additional ballast to be added to the aft section to counter balance the steam plant in the front of the model.

The Krick Borkum however would be a perfect fit just the way it is for one of our Vertical Heron, Sparrow or Mobius steam plants.

The Kingston Moldings hull, the Thames River Launch Duncan is a beautiful model when finished. Just last week for the fun of it one of our local model boat club members brought us a superbly finished model of the Duncan and we placed a Vertical Heron steam plant into it. The model looked absolutely great with the steam plant in it but again it seemed a bit heavy in the bow for this particular boat. I was concerned that the model would be a little bit tender on stability in the water on windy days.

I have attached some photo's of the Duncan with the Heron plant simply just set into the Hull.

Hope that this has helped a little.

Best Regards,

Nick

F.Y.I. Westbourne Model Centre is our new distributor in the U.K. If you would like to see these steam plants in person you may drop by their shop!

Thank you guys for your very helpful input.
Nick that is a very nicely built launch and thank you for the pictures. I wish I lived in the UK but unfortunately I live here in the states. Unfortunate because our government has dragged down our economy so bad our money is worth half of that of the UK's and sinking quick :(

For the price your boilers just can't be beat! Especially the amazing quality and workmanship that you put into them. I do wish however plain less expensive boilers could be found in the US for running in hulls where people would not normally see them but I know how sue happy the US is so I'm sure that's why one can't be found.

Nicks products are available through the United States via this web site:

http://www.monahansteammodels.com/

where the prices are considerably more competetive, due to current exchange rates, than they are in the UK.
