I fancy a change...
« on: October 22, 2008, 06:29:26 pm »

I'm looking at building a surface ship for a change (shock.. {:-{..horror!) I'm looking at the Tamiya USS BB-63 Missouri...decent size, very good prices about, and I presume it can be converted to radio control?

Any of you chaps built one? What do you reckon of the kit? Is it feasible to convert it to full r/c?

Never built one, but looking at the specs looks reasonable enough, what is it? target practise?

77cm long, should be plenty, maybe 4 180 type motors on a single esc, twin rudders, micro servos under the guns to rotate them, more micros under the little planes, the pager motors from picco z's for radars...

I WANT ONE NOW  ok2

Steady man, steady...I'm only fancying building one of these 'cos it'll make a change from stuffing things into tiny spaces inside U-33's interior!!

Mind you, it might make a half decent target for U-33's torpedeos....

Amazon has the misouri for £40, which is sorely tempting...

The temptation may overcome, I'll keep you all posted...

Wonderland Models have the Academy Enterprise 1/400th £45, 1/350th £90

Hmm...just had a look round on ebay, just under ninety quid. Now, I'm not talking myself into this for one second, but I did work over fifty hours overtime last month, and surely I deserve a treat, don't I?   ;)    O0
If I just move U-33 over a bit, put the Blueback sail on top of the wardrobe until the hull is completed, and keep the Gato in the cupboard, an Enterprise would fit on the desk....just.

Hmm... %)

Well, it looks as though you lot have made my mind up for me...I'm working in Eastbourne on Saturday morning, so a trawl round the model shops is called for,

The Enterprise it will be.

Already started clearing my building desk in readiness.... ;)

Thanks for all your help guys, especially cos 918, that link was a tremendous help in making the decision.

Cheers John, if I can't get a sensible discount from the shop by waving the folding stuff in front of the shop man, then ebay it will be. Thanks for the offer of advice as well, I'll be taking you up on that for sure!

Thinking ahead here, seeing as I haven't even bought the kit yet, but just trying to form a mental picture before I get started...

Motors...am I going to overpower the boat with 4 x 385 motors?
ESC's...any recommendations as to what to use?
Batteries...I like good old fashioned gel cells, but any ideas of anything better?
Extras...is it feasible to even consider silly things like working lights, revolving helicopter rotor blades, sound effects, etc?

385 bit of over kill. See what motors little motors are available at the warwick boat show next month.
SLA battery's are a no no due to weight. She looks big but there not a lot below the water so not room for much weight in her. Action do some nice small speed controllers ,perfect foe small boats. john

I realise its probably far too late as you'll be "working" now ;)

BUT Although I imagine Modelzone might have one, (who knows with their dwindling stocks of anything creative) give Trev a try at "train times" the one opposite the Launderette on Seaside. He has quite a few large scale ship models tucked away, and if he's in a good mood he might just barter for cash.

OR there is always the public night sail at Princes Park tonight, should be a good turn out, plenty of people down there on Wednesday were flogging models, it seems the credit crunch is hitting hard, it might just be worth going down and asking there? or if you'd like I could ask around for you if you can't make it? See if anyone's got one.

All the best,

Alex

Thanks Alex, I appreciate that...most kind of you. Yes, I was 'working' earlier...two hours 'work' for five hours overtime pay!  O0

Anyway guys...I've had a slight deviation of plan. The talk of the Enterprise being somewhat tender and not having too much room inside for ballast, etc, made me think again. I'm now the proud owner of the Tamiya 1/350th USS Missouri, I got it for £35.05p from good old ebay, should be here Tuesday(ish)...I feel a couple of days worth of 'sickie' coming on   %)

John...many thanks for all the Enterprise information, it was greatly appreciated. Alex...thanks for the kind offer, that was good of you to offer. Everybody else...thank you all.

John, stand by for a barrage of questions once the kit arrives. How did you do 'this....' Where did you put 'that...'   :embarrassed:

Thanks again guys....

It wasn't me, I wasn't there, nobody saw me and you can't prove a thing.... :P

Rich : no your honour,i was waiting for the glue to dry,and i was overcome by the odour, which made me trawl through the boat kits availiable and funny round things that float, now some people find my findings interesting
Judge : You are banned from any boat website or modelshop till you have finished the boats whether submersible or floating  {-)
