Seeing what looks like a lot of builders rubble in the photo reminds me that rubble from the original Euston Arch was used to repair a leak in the nearby River Lea (Prescott Channel). Is it normal to have that material in the bottom of a canal or could it be a sign of a previous repair?

Dave.

It might also be that the surge of water coming through the canal, caused by the breach, damaged some walls further upstream and the rubble was carried along to where  you see it in the photo. That stretch of the canal is on a bend, where erosion would be higher.
