Who has other hobbies/interests otherthen model boats
« on: April 21, 2006, 07:11:13 am »

I was just wondering what other hobbies/interests members have. You know people who like motorsport, playing with old cars. Myself I like to take landscape photos.  Here is one I took about a year ago at Christmas

When I'm not model boating, I tend to spend a lot of my time in the air.  Gliding and parachuting are some of my hobbies, although there is not a lot of time spent in the air with the latter!!

The first photo is not of me, but of the first person in the group to jump.  I was still shaking inside the aircraft!!!
Taken from about 5,000 ft up.

(There is something quite un-natural about jumping out of a perfectly serviceable aircraft!)

The glider is one of the aircraft at my local gliding club.

Hi,

Model railways, running the club website (not the same effort as Mayhem, but mine own), crosswords (solving and compiling), sudoku etc, programming (been trying, but not very hard, for 15 years to get my head around C), digital photography and reading novels. I also like to walk in the hills but usually have to settle for a couple of miles road walking a day.

I'm an avid maritime photographer ( as Dave Leishman has found out !! ) with well over 10,000 photo's taken over the last 30 years. I've still got 2,000 recent photo's to edit and another 4,000 yet to be scanned. I also run a wargamming club in Fraserburgh. We play Warhammer , Warhammer 40k , Necromunda , Mordheim , Space Hulk and American War of Independance ( everything in 28mm scale except AWI which is 20mm scale ). Up till my bad accident thats left me with 2 squashed disks in my back I was a keen angler both fresh water fly fishing and sea fishing ( had my own 25ft Ferro-cement ex-commercial fishing boat ) and until this time last year I was always out walking my Lurcher but until I have an operation to remove a chunk of bone thats broken off my ankle I can barely walk 30ft !!!.

In my youth ( well 25 years ago lol ) I used to program computer games on the good old Spectrum , Commodore 64 and the early model PC's. My style of games were Text Adventure games which are nothing more than glorified database management lol. Still got my Spectrum 128 +2 and my Commmodore C64 to play the old games on as simulating them on a PC just isnt the same. I used to program in Machine Code ( Z80 on the Spectrum , 6502 on the C64 and 68000 on the first PC's ) but sometimes took the easy route of programming in BASIC and compiling it into machine code if I was in a lazy mood.

Nope. What I'm *really* wondering, is why you spell your name with a c.

riggers24,
How about amateur radio (ham radio), computer graphics and photo manipulation?  The first I've been a part of for almost 40 years, the second for only about 15 years.  Use the second to 'change' pictures to 'suit' any situation, then the first to send those pictures to other people almost anywhere in the world.  A sure way of getting in trouble with the people in the pictures, but fun.
Someone mentioned old cars.  Been there done that too.  Wish I'd finished the last one before I retired!  Anyone want an old Ford pickup (almost as old as me)?  Best way in the world of throwing away money.  Also lots of fun, and I made a killing on the one before this one!
Also used to love playing pool.  Wasn't half bad till my vision sort of got crossed.  Now, there's just too many balls to mess with.
Most fun I have is watching people.  No idea if that's a hobby or not.  Also no idea of how to give an example that wouldn't get me barred from the forums! lol  Amazing what you see sometimes.  Never figured out why some of the 'fads' going around don't go straight into the ground, but, some of them are very nice (I'm going to take up 'body-painting' as soon as I master this @#$ airbrush!  If my doctor will approve it.).
Flying was also one of my hobbies till the cost of fuel got so ridiculous.  The real ones, not the little ones.  And why anyone want's jump out of one I'll never understand!  (Almost tried that too, but chickened out.)
Had lots of 'free' time while working so have sort of mixed all of the above with work, at times.  Visitors to the station often were shocked/discouraged from comming back, and a few came back anyway (really odd ones!).
My most favorite hobby is complaining.  My bosses finally understood that if I wasn't complaining I wasn't happy for some reason.  Almost took the fun out of it...
Several other 'hobbies' but like I said, I don't wanna get thrown off the forum...

Oh dear, lot`s of interests and other activities- but not enough time!  :P

My son and I do a bit archery, with selfmade Longbows. We enkoy ourselfes in the nature. Another interest is making slot-cars scale 1:24 for our Carrera which leads through the whole flat. And of course my sports, which become minor through the modeling season....  ::)

I blew part of my early retirement grant on a 21ft Jaguar 24 sailing yacht. (I used to have a Jaguar 25 but sold her a couple of years ago). Built in 1983 she is in need of a bit of tlc but we've got the outside sorted out and tomorrow she goes into the 'oggin so wish me luck. They drop you in with a crane and leave you suspended to check for leaks - from the inside! main engine is a 6hp Tohatsu 4 stroke in a cockpit well plus I've also got a 2.5hp Yamaha for the dinghy which can also be mounted on the transom as a belt and braces alternative if the bigger one has a fit of the vapours. Both motors are brand new and not run in. Tomorrow morning we have to negotiate our way out of a tidal pool and round to a drying pontoon in Thornham Marina in Chichester harbour before the tide drops and leaves us on the mud! This is why I've not been doing much modelling lately!

Hi,
I am part way through building a 10ft clinker sailing dinghy. Hope to get it on the water this year. Hope it doesnt sink!

I am also part way through building an orrerry from my own design. Well, its the second attempt, the first one didnt work! I had to build my own dividing head to cut the gears as they arent made for my lathe, (knew I should have got a myford! doh!)

I'm an avid maritime photographer ( as Dave Leishman has found out !! ) with well over 10,000 photo's taken over the last 30 years.

I can happily vouch for that, and my gallery's much the happier for it :D

My lifetime hobby is avoiding DIY to the best of my ability (unless I directly benefit from it ;)), despite the best efforts of the better half!

I dabble in programming C and C++ but have lapsed recently to pick up PHP scripting for the web.

I tend to like spending the odd hour here and there running around first person shooter games - primarily WWII like Medal of Honor, Call of Duty and the like, but also Battlefield 2 more recently.

Wow, love the Mustang!! A car I would have loved to own but never will. I own a 1950 Austin Sheerline DS1, bought as a derelict(intact) from a scrapyard 17 years ago. I have srtipped and rebuilt the old girl over this period but work slowed to a virtual standstil 6 years ago since I took on the submarine business. I  have only just picked it up again and begun to rebuild the interior which was completely wrecked. Getting there slowlylbut steadily. For the amount of work involved, I should have built a Bentley instead as it would have been worth a great deal more when finished. We did it for the love of it rather than the money... but thats what hobbies are all about, isnt it?

Dave.. It has a Stromberg downdraught carb which I lovingly refer to as 'the bucket' which feeds the iron head 6pot ohv oilwell under the bonnet. On a good day its supposed to return around 15mpg.. God knows what it will be like on a bad day but given the price of fuel, I reckon I'm going to need a trailer full of loot to keep it rotating. For all that, its as smooth as a 'Roller' and I want to get it on the road before someone high up decides to turn the British oil supply off!
best regards... Chris

Well, as they say, better out than in - the water I mean!  ;) My boat went back in  yesterday. When we left, the boat was in the water but the water wasn't in the boat so let's hope it stays that way.

I had a neighbour, be died a couple of years ago. He wasn't much liked so many people avoided him, but he was very good at trapping me when I walked my dogs past his bungalow. He had an endless fund of old stories, most of which I found very interesting, especially about the cars he had owned, and one of these was an Austin Sheerline. He'd owned his own business years ago and must have been a wealthy man, he'd owned several RRs or 'Royces' as he always referred to them, but the Sheerline had been his all-time favourite. He often repeated the tale of how he'd once driven from his home in Bournemouth to Marble Arch for a bet, all in top gear, not a single gear change. It must have been in the mid 1950s, and instead of the M3 he'd have had to drive through towns like Basingstoke and the outskirts of London on the old single carriageway A3, with traffic lights, roundabouts etc. He reckoned that none of his RRs could have managed it, so the Austin must have had a torquey old motor. He also told me that he never managed to get the mpg into double figures.
