There are people who know more about vintage model engines on here, but i'll take a punt that it's amateur design and made- very nice though.

It's unusual to have a cylinder block that is made from one casting and it doesn't have reversing gear, the trunk guides are also very 'workmanlike', that's how it looks to me anyway.

Have you steamed it? Got a boat for it yet...? :-))

A friend brought it to me tonight its a piston valve engine.
Putting air through it after a sluggish start off she went reverse is via the leaver you can see in the photograph I was thinking Hemmens for some reason but I'm unsure.

Strangely enough that cylinder block is identical to my Hemmens Caton 'V' four units.  Perhaps it is a home made twin using a 'V' four as a donor or maybe Hemmens made a twin at one point using the same head block.  The Catons were reversed using a shuttle valve in the supply lines to the cylinders so not surprising this is not reversible.

It is reversable by the way.

I'm sure hemmings did make a twin like that , I nearly bought one. It was over 10 years ago that i looked at them so time may have fogged the memory somewhat, but i remember the throttle/reversing lever looked a lot like that. I was particularly interested in it because it only used i channel for fwd/rev & throttle. I will have a dig through the old files & see if i still have the literature on it. Of course i could be totally mistaken , it wouldn't be the first time.

Hi chaps,

For your info the green engine is a Caton twin as finished from John hemmens in the mid to late 80's and the red engine is the improved caton engine called the Max 2.

Both engines were controlled by two radio channels, one for reversing and the other for steam regulation.

Hope this helps.
