Humbrol tinlet mixing
« on: December 19, 2006, 10:49:01 am »

Hi all

In the current restoration of a model steam-boat, I am endeavouring to mix up colours from the Humbrol enamel 'tinlet' range in order to match the original boat's colour scheme.  However, my local hobby shop's stock is rather depleted, especially of the all important MATT white,  which is needed to tone down the gloss finish of the other colours in the mix to a satin-matt finish.
I have on the other hand, found a tinlet of their matt clear varnish.  Question is, can this be put into the paint mix to further enhance the 'matting down' proceedure or must it only be used as a final clear top coat?

Seefalke, I can definately confirm that you can mix Humbrol matt clear with gloss paint to get a satin finish however the down side is that you will have a reduced opacity which may require an additional coat.

Another way is to paint the item the colour you want irrespective of finish then mix matt and gloss clear to the satin finish you require and put a coat of that over the top.

Probably the best is blending the same colour matt paint with the gloss paint but this is easier said than done with colours that are not off the shelf.  This is what I did with a black coaster hull and I deliberately adjusted the mix to give a realistic texture to the hull plating.
