Motor Torpedo Boat
« on: June 06, 2010, 08:14:27 pm »

Hi all - I'm searching for an MTB kit which I can turn into a fast model which will plane easily.  I'm considering a Vospers Perkasa P150 by Hooben, or possibly a Deans Marine MTB488.  Here are the links for both:

http://vosper-perkasa.com/estore/product_info.php?products_id=49
http://www.deansmarine.co.uk/shop/product_info.php/cPath/10_14/products_id/212

Does anyone have any other ideas for a good quality, high detail kit?

I'd also be grateful for some help on propulsion - I'd like a brushless motor/lipo battery set-up, but I'm not sure how to choose the right motors/battery, particularly as I will need three motors.  Again, if anyone has a set-up which works well I'd be interested to know more.

Thanks everyone,

Gary

hi im just about to finish that hooben perkasa.my opinion its a horrible kit to build.a lot of bad mouldings.i thought a lot of it is really designed for a factory build.if i had the choice i woukld spend the extra and get it ready built.in my opinion if you build it and then put in a fast brushless a lot of the kit wont stand up to it.but ready built it would.ask me anything you want about this kit before you buy it.

If you want a high quality kit Deans Marine fittings leave a lot to be desired.I purchased a Mouldeans Hull for a British Power Boat No 449 and scratch built the fittings.Used 540 motors with nicad pack for each motor, boat runs great.

The Nautical Marine Kits look like good quality on the web.

Many thanks for the advice so far - it's always good to hear from people with first hand experience of the kits.

The nautical marine model looks good - I'd go for the Perkasa I think.  This is looking favourite unless anyone else has any ideas.

Thanks, Gary

hi there

Have you ever thought of building from a plan - cos - MYHOBBIESSTORE - do a set of plans for the MTB 488.   Plan is numbered MM1377.  I myself have built this model from these plans and its pretty straightforward - plus a good set of plans to build from - with an awful lot of detail.   There are 2 variations on the plan, one for an MTB and one for a motor gun boat.

Hi marksg, The Elco 80 PT Boat by Italieri is a popular, highly detailed plastic kit in 1:35 scale, which can be adapted for rc use with a bit of research/effort.  I have seen conversions with single, double and even triple motors/propellors. They all plane/perform really well and this hull is similar (ish) in size to the other kits you are looking at.

http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=4310.0

Theses kits normally retail for around £90 + p/p, however, there is the odd 'bargain' ( Ebay................ £66 + £15 p/p  %)  )

This classic  WW2 American MTB is a late war version, and is very heavily armed. Worth a look?

I think the Italieri kit is a little too small - although the quality of the injection moulding looks really good.  Unfortunately a scratch build or semi kit is beyond my skills - I've made a number of kits from Graupner and Billings and these test the limits of my skills (I have great admiration for those who have the skills and patience to build from a set of plans only)

I've posted a question about motor/speed control and batteries in the brushless forum, but can anyone recommend a good combination of brushed motor, esc and batteries which will give really good performance assuming I go for the nautical marine Perkasa 35" with twin props.

Many thanks, Gary

Hi Marksg,
If you are leaning towards the Perkasa why not go with the Dave Abbott review setup as per Model Boats Sept.2009.

Check out the Forum sponsors' websites for information etc like this. For example, here's something which might suit you:
http://www.action-electronics.co.uk/pdfs/Perkasa%20-%20Nautical%20Marine%20Models.pdf
You could beef up the NiMH pack to 8.4v and 5000maH if you wish, but no more as the ECO motors will complain!
There's an action photo of a similar model with an identical power train on the Model Slipway website http://www.modelslipway.com/ - it's called "Kawkab".

Hi marksg, the Graupner speed 600 motors come in many voltages and outputs and it's well worth studying the range available:

 http://www.westbourne-model.co.uk/electric-motors-drive-sets-for-model-boat-1727-0.html

If you want high performance then the 600 Eco/P94 on 7.2v will be restrictive although workable on 2 channel rc gear. The reviewer used 600 Race which are a very high rev/ low torque option, suited to 7.2v. The versatile 600 BB Turbo model 3302 is more expensive but it offers substantial  performance advantages - 5000 maH can be used. Twin higher rated esc's on 3 channel gear (alternative to mixer) allows higher amps to motors and also gives enhanced steering/handling options and minimal wiring.  :-)
