Advice please on Minicraft MB 450 bench sander
« on: July 26, 2010, 06:02:29 pm »

I'm thinking about buying a Minicraft MB 450 bench sander (Page 111 in Squires Catalogue). I'd be grateful to hear from anyone who has one, what they think of it. Being a 12 volt beast I'm concerned to know if it will be man enough to cope with plasticard up to 2.5 mm without stalling. All opinions welcome !
Best Wishes

I've had mine for several years and use it most  days. It's a little beaut and one of the best tools I've acquired.  :-))
Mine's coupled to a Minicraft variable speed transformer  which enables it to cope well with various thickness materials including plastic, though ,in respect of the latter, the revs need to be kept down to eliminate the risk of the plastic's edge melting. It's also brilliant for trimming (aka 'filing') the sawn ends  brass rod and tube.

Don't bother with Fine or Medium sanding discs -they're not necessary and tend to  clog too quickly - but do get a good supply of Course grade coz you'll get through 'em PDQ. I tried to cut my own discs from otherwise suitable material but found that the DIY discs tended to fly off to easily when in use so I abandoned the idea  and use only proprietary discs.  O0

Thanks for the info. - I'm off now to order one. You mention the variable speed transformer - I see you can get a kit, including the transformer plus discs for only £10 more than the cost of the sander alone. :-))

The bundle is very good value for money. Don't forget to order extra COURSE discs!!!!

I echo everything Popeye says, plus I would recommend you clamp it to the bench as it does vibrate a bit, but I've used mine for years along with a whole army of £25 (as was) Minicraft and Maxicraft tools, including the circular saw, orbital sander and of course their drills.

And I used it for 1/16th" hard brass too!
