Helicopter
« on: August 03, 2010, 11:16:11 pm »

Hi all,

I went to the "wings and Wheels" show and came away with an RC Helicopter, so am spending a lot of time learning to fly it.

It came with a 4 channel 2.4 system, which is quite nice. The reciever,  Main ESC, Tail ESC etc is an all in one unit and also contains a gyro to help trim the copter.

It is an Esky Honeybee. Google and have a look at the TX and other spare parts as some might be usefull for other applications.

add some ''sponsens'' to the landing rails.. then you can land it on the water, then you can call it a boat  %% %% %% %%

look at the simulator kits for the honeybee on ebay, wont cost much but will save you a fortune in spares and rebuild time :)

Is it fixed or collective pitch.... I found the slightly more expensive collective pitch easier to fly

It's a fixed pitch, with collective. I have the training kit for it to give it a larger footprint while i learn. It came with a simulator and a USB lead so that i can practice on the PC.

I have watched many vids on you tube as well, rather than jumping straight in at the deep end, as there are quite a few about the HoneyBee.

HI Dueller, the esky honeybee will be either fixed pitch OR collecti ve pitch, they are produced with both. Collective pitch will be 6 channel, fixed pitch 4 channel, most parts will be interchangeable, however the 4:1 receiver, and the head will differ considerably. I like the fixed pitch honeybee, its a great learner heli, that still requires to be "flown", unlike the coaxial contra rotating helis that almost fly themselves they are so stable. The bee can be flown outdoors in calm conditions, but is a blast in a large hall etc, its a bit big for the living room as it will create downwash that will make it unstable. If it a V1, there are a number of really good cheap upgrades to make it way better, if its a V2 it has most of the ungrades standard.

First job to do, fit a 7.5v inline fuse between pos on the board and either battery or motor.(cant remeber which, see heliguy.com forum) THis will protect the 4:1, which is 50% the value of the heli if it goes up in smoke, and its a common fault, if you crash, the blades strike the boom, and the motor locks up, then the reciver blows up, the fuse will protect it, dead easy job, and will save over £40. Direct tail motor is a good upgrade (google gws tail motor mod) the heli will then have more tail authority, particularly for outdoors. If its a fixed pitch, the rotor head speed controlls the altitude, the blade pitch alters with headspeed on a collective pitch. Beter heli, but harder to set up. Visit www,heliguy.com for a dedicated thread on these helis :-))

Its funny you should say that Red, I found the Collective pitch easier to fly than fixed pitch

Ive got one of the contra rotating helis at the moment, which is great fun to just charge and blast... fitted a little wireles cam to it for even more entertainment value lol

Hi guys well after all I have read Im glad I decided to only go 3 channel or 4 channel twin collective pitch... I have 8 Helicopters all differening in sizes and the best I have found in my flying fleet are 2 that stand out most of all.. one is the EC1355  4 channel and the other is the Defender 3 channel... both of these helis really look the part when you add crewmen into the helis and both fly really great... Oh they wont beat the sound barrier but then I can hover turn and just glide the heli past me and others for complete enjoyment..The EC135 is available on Ebay and also from Hobbyking ARF and the same with the Defender from Ebay have a look and im sure youre Helicopter fears and judgements will be at rest... Both beautiful aircraft to fly on a calm day.

Cheers

Anyone else who fancies dipping a toe in the RC heli pool then you cant go wrong with one of these.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/RC-Helicopter-8828-Radio-Controlled-plane-car-boat-UK-_W0QQitemZ160481520600QQcmdZViewItem?rvr_id=148429924721&query={query}&fitem=160481520600&linkin_id=57201&mt_id=635&kw={query}

Make sure you watch the first video

Picked one up yesterday and my stepson(10) had it flying round the garden within a few mins and yes its as tough as the video shows
spares are easy to find online and cheap as chips

Ill take shoot videos and post up later

yes I certainly would.
They are a great way to test the water and see if RC helis are for you before stepping up to something a bit bigger and better.  If you do want to move up then I would seriously reccomend you find a local flying club.
For uk members www.bmfa.org is a good place to start.
Like all clubs there are good ones and bad.  So it pays to check out as many local ones as possible.  Most clubs will welcome new members with open arms and are very friendly.
A BMFA registered club should not charge members for teaching you to fly, most will have qualified instructors who will teach you for free (Unless you count membership fees)

Quick guide for 3ch Helis
The 3 CH heli like the one listed above normally come with a gyro and so are quite stable and will hold a hover quite comfortably with little effort.  4CH and 6Ch are a little different and will need much more commitment and a lot more practice (see my reccomendations above)

Find a nice open area to practice in with no distractions. If its grass make sure its quite short.

The trick is (and this was the hardest bit for my stepson lol) to only use very small control movements and keep the heli low to the ground.  This way if you bottle goes or you feel like you are loosing control just ease back the throttle and let it drop to the ground without fear of damage.

the left stick is the throttle and controls the climb and decend ease the throttle forwards slowly untill the heli just starts lifting of the ground.  Gentle movevemnts of the left stick will be required to hold a hover.  Try to hold a hover at about 20 cms and sitting motionless (well rotors rotating anyway lol)

now try climbing and decending pushing the left stick forwards to climb (be warned there is a point at about 30-50cms where the downwash from the blades makes the heli unstable)
Test your hovering skils by climbing, holding the position for a count of 10 then decending and repeating the operation

once you are confident holding a hover and getting the heli up and down move on to turning. easing the right stick left and right will turn the heli, try turning the heli

Whilst holding the hover turn the heli thru 8 points of the compass holding it in a steady hover in each position for a count of 10

Keep practicing the hover as it needs to become second nature

Probably now will be a good time to recharge the battery pack and maybe your underwear lol

Next step is moving forwards
Get up to a comfortable hovering height and then ease the right stick forwards, you might need a llittle more throttle to keep the altitude the same and a little left right movements to keep the heading straight . move the heli forwards a little and the return to the hover position.  Ease the stick back now and the heli will reverse move back a little.  Again a little extra throttle may be required to maintain altitude.

This is only a basic guide but should be enough to get you going and airbourne.  Like anything it does take practice and confidence.  I have been flying RC planes for over 10 years but I will still only fly my Fokker DR1 on a buddy line with my old instructor (2 RC TXs linked together)

Anyone serious about getting into RC planes should most certainly invest in a Simulator
FMS is free and a good place to start
those of you who have a 4CH+ radio with a trainer socket should be able to ind a USB lead to suit and can practice using your own controller

Realfly is good for planes but Phoenix RC is better for helicopters.  They are not cheap but will pay for themselves when you consider what a plane/heli costs to replace after an accident

Let me know how you get on

Thanks for this very informative material Gary, you make it sound so simple, unlike some of the learn to fly books ,that i,ve been reading,I,ve had these small indoor Heli,s,and they have been great fun, right up to the point ,where our cat thought it was a bird, and plucked it out of the air, {-)
having watched the vid ,where the German guy,did all those nasty things to t,makes me beliieve, that i just might be able to fly this,
I,ve had planes in the past,..but almost all have ended up in the breakers yard,..My last one, which was one of those Spitfires, that came in weekly bits with a magazine,...No I did,nt pay hundreds of pounds for it,I got it fully built on ebay for £100,..When I got t it was immaculate,..complete with the engine and rc gear, all i had to do was add fuel,....this did,nt last, I flew it over the summer without serious mishap, but in July it ended up as a pile of junk,..I had been out at the back of the house, and was flying it over a field of barley,I lost control of it and it came in fast and low skimming the barley and it crashed, when i got to it, the wings had been shredded,"doped tissue," by the barley and all that was left as the fuselage,...but at least it had,nt cost mean arm or a leg,
There,s a Mod,Seaplane Flying club near where i stay, and there,s 2/3 other clubs within a 25 mile radius, and the Scottish Heli  champion lives near here,
personally I,ll be happy with just this model,
I,ll keep you informed,

Please do

little suggestion. get a few spare blades (We've chipped one so far hegetrimming lol) but it hasnt affected performance at all

The deag spitfire you had was a good kit. I built it as well tho I didnt use the supplied Tx or RX and changed the leo engine for a 4 stroke OS.  Its on permanent loan to a member of the Chelmsford Model Flying club who still flies it regularly and of course I do when Im in the UK and have chance.

My pride and joy tho is my 1/5 Fokker DR1 Triplane with a real radial engine

See told ya so boys and our toys... Yes looked at that meself Gary lovely mean machine... I have the Venom GP 1/8 Scale 3 of them and 2 1/5th Scale done up madly haha
Loads of fun...One of the 1/5th scale, instead of having servo turning gear is that the Rider actually leans as in a real bike and this is what makes the Bike driveable.. Its a Ducati Desmodee something or other and goes really well.. Always get a great crowd and a good laugh when I hit the gutter or something like that..The Venoms are fully upgradable as in a lot of the Cars and they are quick little beasties also.

My most Fav bike was my GSX1100 Katana, which I had longer than my ex-wife,...she once said to me,"you spend more time with that damned bike than you do with me,anybody would think you loved it more than me" O0 O0...she got it right, {-)
I,ve had a few Dakkar style bike,s in my time,e.g. Yamaha Super Tenere,"not really a true Dakkkar, but looked the part, and handled well, then i had the Africa Twin, this was more Dakkar, then there was the big Suzuki, Dr Big,800cc single pot, ..ok...the one to avoid like the plague, is the old Cagiva  Elefant ..although it had a 900cc Ducati engine,it was a dog,...if your wife ever lets you have one,..first buy her a pair of new shoes,or maybe a repo Vutton bag, then tell her you,re getting a bike  %% and go for either the KTM 650,or the Beemer,

I used the" i know better" method to learn...... took many hundreds of pounds and a couple of years to get inverted   ....!

Hi Essex, I have hidden under  a table my new toy, eflite Blade msR, so cool!! easly to fly indoors, palm size, but not contra, its a tail driven and main rotor little beast! very durable unlike the contras, already smacked the wall a few times and no breakages!

i have just bought one of these incredible little E-Flite MSR heli's for flying in the house when the weather is doing its worst outside

what a cracking little thing it is too, not ideal for a raw beginner with no experience, it is not a cheap! it is however a quality device, despite the fact it is fixed pitch it flies just like a "proper" nitro collective pitch heli , flying slow circuits round the lounge is just so demanding with the rotor only inches from the wall, curtains, ceiling and lights... certainly helps focus ones concentration %%
