club 500 build help please!
« on: September 11, 2010, 05:49:30 pm »

anybody got any interior pics of such please? THis "easy" build id turning into a nightmare. Instructions are pretty useless, and the cut lines atre near invisible!

Anyway, with the propshaft in the correct position, and 2mm blade clearance, this puts the motor on the mount under the front deck, which will be inaccessable for future maintenance, and the angle motor shaft to propshaft is way out. This cannot be correct?? :embarrassed:, so before I open the epoxy, It would be great to get some help

Thanks!

I'll take a few shots of the inside of mine when I get back later tomorrow but I do know that the motor mount is well inside the front decking.  My motor is held in with cable ties so relatively easy to fit and remove as required.

thanks Bunkerbarge, its appreciated, and ok if I send the thing down to you Martin, you can finish it :D

I decided to get the shaft in tonight so it will cure fro tomorrow, assuming I am allowed into the shed tomorow :embarrassed: I had to split the motor mount and prop support just to get it in, and will adjust the mount when its all together. Of couse, I am working back to front as usual, I wanted the deck on first, not thinking the motor would be that far forward (would a shorter shaft not have meant the motor was closer to the centre, giving better accessability for maintenance and better weight distribution?), so its going to be a bit tricky now getting the motor all lined up correctly {:-{ I made a rough prop support, so I could maintain 2mm clearance between prop blades and the hull. If anybody can assist with ideas or personal experience, please chip in!

you can see how far out the shafts where, I had to pack out the motor mount to get it "almost" 100%. These discs I use are a real help, and easy to use, turned on a lathe by a friend! (thanks!) :-))

When it goes wrong, it ALL goes wrong! Cannot understand what has gone wrong with this easy build. Now, I thought I was being clever, fitting a wedge to the shaft under the hull, so I knew what the distance between propshaft and hull was, keeping it within 2mm clearance. All went well, till I realised that some of the epoxy to set the shaft had leaked down the shaft to the wedge, which was then well and truely stuck on the boat >:-o, so more time lost getting that off.

I then remembered, I had forgotton to fit an oiler tube, had to do it in situ, all went well, but guess what, forgot to remove the aceteal plastic bearing first, now thats knackered!! <:(

You might get away with it if you have room to fit a Doden / double coupling but I doubt it.

1. Is the shaft and skeg fully glued in?
2. What glue did you use?
3. is the motor mount glued in?

Hi Martin, its all set in now, motor mount, and shaft was epoxy, to get the motor to line up, as in 2nd pic, so the discs are touching all round, it took a bit of packing on the motor mount. Thanks for you pics, they are a constant reference, I was so convinced my propshaft was too long suppied by mistake, then saw your pic with the ruler, mine is correct length :embarrassed:

Obviously a fundamental error on my part, and you know who will be vetting the build prior to me starting the next 2 (yes got 3, me and two lads!). Mine will be the last one, so will be best, Making all te building errors on the first 2! lightweight mini servo and all the best bits like 2.4 going in that one, well I cant have my lads beating me, And I will also have to beat HS93 when he builds his :}

All is not yet lost!

You could remove the prop tube if needs be, without wreaking the hull, have a look at:
http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=15399.0
http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=1529.0
http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=2319.0

My personal method was to remove the bearing both ends and stick a soldering iron up the end and twisting slightly back-n-forth
until it "snapped" free ( and pulled out) or the glue melted and the tube slowly withdrawn.

You may have to make the hole a bit bigger to get the alignment right but epoxy is cheap and strong to fill the gaps. Use off cuts
to fill/reinoculate the hole. Usually I drill the holes (then make the corrections!), couple up motor, coupling, tube and shaft together,
glue down the motor mount, align everything up again, with the prop tube in an ever-so-slightly oversized hull hole, (I use Blue Tack
to seal the underside of the hull), and once I'm happy, pour on a tiny amount of Epoxy on the inside. If everything is still aligned
pour on enough epoxy to hold it in place.

thanks BB, your motor is def further back than mine :((

I like the rudder servo mount, I was thinking of something like that, much neater now I have seen it. Boat was "in paint shop" tonight, bit disappointed with the finish on the top deck, when I peeled the plastic covering off, the paint finish is full of small dimples, almost like that shrink wrap was put on too early?

I was hoping to run it tomorrow morning at New Brighton opening ceremony, but it wont be ready. I have heard that they intend to run a club 500 series, which will be really good on that new lake
