Another New Memeber
« on: September 23, 2010, 11:06:26 pm »

Hi there forum memebers!

I am new to the forum and just wanted to introduce myself.
I have been reading though the forum over the past day or so and decided that i would join and become what i hope is a valued member of the forum.
Let me tell you a tad about myself, I am an experienced model maker i have been modelling since I was a small boy, from scratch builds to kits I have always been interested in model boating of many forms, my preferred subject is working vessels mainly tugs and i am interested in learning more about tug towing & steering competitions, they sound like something i could get into.
I have yet to build a tug boat although they are a keen interest to me, my reason is that over the years I have just restored boats brought from others and ebay at low cost.
Any tug kit suggestions or information in tug towing is welcome.
I am keen to get started in the right place after recently moving to Torquay and not having a boat to get on with  :((
My main trade is carpentry although i have experience in a range of subjects that i have acquired over the years.
I am looking forward to aiding others in their build's and share my knowledge and experience.

Hi Tugwash and welcome - this is now going to get more confusing we have Tugwash, Pugwash and Pugwash4
think we had better stick to Harry and Geoff.  If you have been following the forum for a couple of days, we aren't
usually as grumpy - we just let off steam every so often.  There are some very knowledgeable, skilled and helpful
( I'm in the helpful category) people and they do seem to know a lot about tugs so you should be fine.

Thanks for that warm welcome.
Harrys fine, the forum sign up page needed a login nickname so i used the same as my email, I had noticed a few odd comments on some of the 'chit chat' pages im not to interested in the daily banter, I am here just to offer advice and ask it when needed, which is really my first question, i have been looking at some model tug kits by model slipway the 'wyeforce' the 'stan tug 1608' from MMM and a few of the tugs from Tynes Models such as 'The Flying Spindrift' my budget is not a issue to buy a kit i have been heading towards the spin drift it looks like an all round and very attractive model, but it is a wee bit long at 40" it may not fit in my car, are there any suggestions to any of the above mentioned in quality of the kits? and what would be a decent model to use in tug towing? my list is subject to change i am open for suggestions.
My budget is around £600 but that should include all the paint and electronics etc, im also looking for electrical set-ups for model tugs, as i am unfamiliar with the use of kort's and such i have only had experience in the past with fixed single shaft boats no bigger then around 36" which is as big as i can fit in the back of a mini!

Hi Harry

Welcome to Mayhem where you will find a 'Mine of information' and all the help you need. I certainly benefited from their experience.   O0

Have you seen the list of Tugs on the front page ?
http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/

There should be something there to suit your taste. Personally I have built a few, but the 'best looker' was the Imara with twin props which (with the right motors) could compete in any tug competition.

Hope this helps

I've just seen a post about MSC Marlene from tyne models that look like quite an attractive boat to use in events any thoughts on it? its a nice size and will fit in back of my car at only 30" long.
I have read the description it says use 555 motors with 6v which sounds fine to me, any thoughts on using geared motors running it on 12v 7ah LA batterys? how long should i be looking to run the model for 30 mins or so or longer, all i have and a few nhmi and lipos although my budget is quite high obviously spending less always is a bonus  :-))

Needless to say i am undecided on a model but i am after one that can deliver plenty of power and one that will last quite a few years without having to replace it.

Normally with tugs you use SLA batteries because tugs normally need a lot of ballast and the SLAs are heavy. :-))

Hey guys

Can i ask a favour, could you guys take the banter over text colour else where rather then on my post, not that i don't value your opinions but i don't want to see it filled with a junk conversation over text colour, i would rather you helped me with information i require, i have noticed quite a few of you regular posters do tend to fill up posts with useless 'chatter' i assumed that what the 'chit chat' pages are for,
I would ask politely that unless you have something that is helpful to me not to post replies on my post(s), its not helpful, and detracts from the issues, I and possible many others have when topics become filled with useless conversation.

I feel that this comment may offend some of you i don't mince words likely but tough please can you stick to the point of the topic or don't post at all, i can tell many of you are bored and have nothing else to do but post anything at random to topics you see.
I will make one suggestion if your bored enough to post rubbish on blogs and topics, why not pop to your sheds and workshops and build something other then wasting your time with the pointless banter.

many thanks  :-))

Dicky I have noticed that you are one of the conspirators of this banter, I read on several posts of the 'mickey' taking towards some guy, for your added pleasure of 'egging' on other members to have a dig at him too, admittedly he does seam a bit of a know it all, but that should not give you the right stick your ore in don't you think?

This is not an argument its a fact your a prolific poster yourself, yes i have come to make friends, not to take part in arguments but i would like to keep it factual rather what takes place, from what i can tell its this type of banter that makes not me but you disliked on a forum.

I may be new but i have had my fair share of pillocks to deal with over my life and have no problem spotting one now. If you have nothing worth while adding to a topic please don't post that's all im asking. The way some people will conduct themselves is very disappointing especially someone of your age group you are letting the 'group community down' i may be new but im not stupid or blind.

Hi Harry, I would say welcome to the Forum BUT if you've been reading the threads you will appreciate that there is a relaxed atmosphere on Mayhem and that's what makes it what it is. What you see is very much what you get. If you don't like it - well -tough

We all get 'oddities' on our threads and sometimes they wander round the houses BUT I've also found that that meandering can lead to gems of information and help.

If the Moderators consider that a wrong turn has been taken then we all tend to abide by their decisions but in general there is a very high level of tolerance of the foibles of others.

Some members could be considered as OTT at times BUT you will also find that those members have plenty of 'Thank You' messages for their input and consideration of newcomers.

I don't disagree with you i am a very simple person i just want to take part in sharing information and experiences.
In regards to OTT member's a little though would go a long way to be honest, i haven't come here to be ridiculed i just want to take part in what you say a relaxed atmosphere, i think maybe some member's over the past day are blowing off steam so maybe i am perceiving them in the wrong light? only time will tell i guess.

I certainly don't want to upset people especially being a new member to the forum but i would like other to understand who i am. in this instance i would just like to keep my post factual which is a simple request i am not a computer junkie nor do i know much about them, so keeping post that i ask question on subject related would help me a great deal in retrieving information i need to aid me with projects.

Its a simple request and i hope other will understand that and continue to be helpful.

Tugwash, please don't take this the wrong way, but it intrigues me that you're the about the same age and live in the same location as Prophet, who seemingly went a little bit Nazi in a now-locked topic last night. You (don't) use apostrophes and capital "i"s, in much the same way, and you've both talked about the model boat Marlene.

I find that quaintly fascinating.

No offence taken but i can assure you i am not the same person if thats what your suggesting? need photographic proof just ask  ok2

My only interest in the Marlene is that i assumed that members with larger post numbers have experience with these types of kits and it was near the top of the list in the tug category, since there have been only limited reply s to what are good tugs to use for competitions i have to ask what is what.

I have looked at so many kits but still at a loss to what is a good one to use, if member's point out boats that they are thinking of using I can only be lead to believe this is what the rest of the crowd are using, it would be foolish of me to overlook that fact and put myself at a disadvantage.

Well Harry you obviously didn't notice the name of the forum, it is Mayhem.

We have a fairly relaxed attitude on this forum with very good moderators who come down hard if you push the limits.

One of the things they dont like is the personal attack on another member.

You might look back to the beginning of this topic and you will find I was one of the first to try to help you. It was also the last time I shall be doing it.

You also might want to check this out.

A "memeber" is probably one who subscirbes to Dawkin's view of the meme. A transmission of cultural ideas, symbols or practices from one individual to another.

Rather appropriate in this context.  :-))

Hy Harry
Oh Dear
Just a word of advice, when I was a lad, a bit like yourself, I was taught to listen and learn, it was called education, the older hands would show me the ropes and I respected them.  Now I am grown up, %% I still listen and learn, but now I call it progress, Progress through education ( ged it ) Dicky D is a well respected member of this site and has helped a lot of people with genuine advice, he is a prolific poster, because he is very knowledgable about our hobby of building model boats.  Your attack on him seem,s very contrived, ( Mmmmm strange that) and calling him a conspirater has upset me as I did,nt even get a mention ( ah well such is life). So your thread went off course a little, grow up and grow a pair, it happens to all of us at some time, just a gentle nudge would have sent it back in the right direction. Not a very good start is it, but then you probably knew what you were doing  when you made your remarks ;) I wonder how long you will last with you baaaaad attitude.

Harry

I am very disappointed with your comments and was particularly upset with your remarks about my good friend Dicky D.

I tried to help you early on after reading your introductory letter, recommending our members, who might have helped you in your quest for a model boat.  I felt that your letter read like a C.V for a job at Rolls Royce  (where I used to work!) but I put it down to listing your achievements so far, to give us an idea of your skill level.

As you have noticed, your thread has completely been taken over so you may find difficulty getting much help in your quest.  We are a friendly group who discuss all the subjects under the sun and to some of us it's a life blood with the outside world, so rather than start a new thread, we just interject a comment when we feel it appropriate.  We are not too interested in producing threads that read like the Encyclopaedia Britannica.

Tugwash Harry,
From someone looking afar let me say, out of this thread I have obtained
1. Blue is moderators colour (oops)  :embarrassed: :embarrassed:
2.Awards I did not know existed and are well earned  :-)) :-))
So whilst "your" thread has been hijacked  {:-{ {:-{ maybe a little off course  O0 it is still informative and entertaining.
From what I have seen the forum is not putting up studs and then putting on the top plate.
It is more like putting up studs, kick the ball around then put on the top plate.
Chiippies shouldn't have a chip on their shoulders, we have thick skins in OZ it stems from our ancestry  {-) {-) {-)
Life is too short to go from A to B with nothing in between :-)) :-))
