The only practical way to make the railings would be to solder them up in lengths on a jig and then add the capping rails. Not hugely difficult but you will need to practice at this very small scale and may need to compromise with less rails than on the original which were probably 5 bar. Solder paint makes the job easier if you can get hold of it. Alternatively you may be able to find (or even commission) some brass etched railings although that could be a bit expensive given the amount you need to put on the ship. Railings are usually about 3 feet 6 inches high so at 1/16 scale you are looking at railings less than 1/4 inch high (5mm I'd say). I would be tempted to check out the brass etch option myself as oversized untidy railings are very noticeable.

My late friend Ronnie Lawson made a prizewinning model of this liner and it was a really impressive piece of work. Very big project though.

You also have a lot of portholes to do too!

These etched guard rails make life easy - http://www.whiteensignmodels.com/acatalog/1_200_scale.html

I don't know how pedantic you are about scale but if you take a ships guard rail to stand 3'6" high then these would be about 2"(50mm) short on a real vessel, but a whole lot neater than any alternative at this scale.

These are certainly neat but of course they are only 3 bar as seem to be most of the other readily available commercial offerings.

These people might be worth a look: http://www.etchingservice.eu/

The following link shows a set of guard rails for the Titanic in 1/196 scale which would probably be suitable for your model of the "Edinburgh Castle"

Sorry wrong link, but at $125 probably not a viable proposition.

Hi all,
First thanks for all the reply s to my query about railings for the Edinburgh castle. Still not really sure which way I will do it yet.
As an introduction to myself, I was in the Merchant navy way back in the 60s, and still love ships.
I had a stroke a few years back that left me almost blind, but life goes on, so I am not very good at making ships any more, but I keep trying, and as you can I always bite off more than I can chew  {-).
Thanks for your help.
