Small Hexagon Bolt Heads
« on: October 31, 2010, 05:59:22 pm »

Hi All,
I have  a 1/16th Tamar lifeboat (MS) I am building and would like to try to replicate the bolts in the deck, I would also be starting a 1/12th scale mersey (M by D)
I think I have seen something on here with ref to small bolts heads, but have searched the forum with no luck,
can anyone point me in the right direction.

when i built my tyne class at 1/12thscale , i borrowed a die from the local branch of the international plastic modellers society and stamped them out of plasticard , then glued them onto the deck before it was sprayed ! it may be worth contacting your local group to see if they have a suitable die ?

Hi Triumphjon,
Thanks for the idea, do you know what the AF of the boltheads was????,
I can machine an hexagon on the end of a piece of silver steel then harden it,
it is just filing the centre out to suit but I can use the outside as a guide.

The Speedline ones for the 1/12 are 1.98mm AF which is around 14BA, I suppose the 1/16 would be a tad smaller, although strictly scale sizes don't always look right on models.

Might be worth trying   Modern Screws Ltd

   5 Dartford Road, Bexley, Kent DA5 2BH     sales@modern-screws.co.uk     tel  01322 553224

They have a website but not everything is listed.  I bought some 12 ba nuts from them a while
ago.  I needed to know the exact width and thickness etc before buying and asked via email.  Had
a prompt reply with the info.   Good service.

On my 1/16th Tamar I intend to use these 1mm Hex heads

I know they are off scale, but appeared ok on another model.

They also offer an etched sheet of various sized bolt heads

Just a thought, have a look on Speedline's web site. He does a stainless steel bolt head etch set for the 1/16 Severn. It would seem that they just stick on and being stainless won't need any further finishing.

Hi Barry,

Punch and die set were available from Historex agents

http://www.historexagents.com/shop/tips_punch.php

They also do Grandt line bolts eyes etc but only a small selection.

These are great for scratch building. There is another supplier but I´m in Tenerife at the moment (lucky me). Contact Stan from Kirklees MBC he gave me the company name in the first place.

Hi Longshanks.

The company is  SB Models Barrow In Furness Cumbria . Check out my build of the Robbe Schultz on Warships and military small bolts used during construction came from SB Models.
