1977 Airfix 'Golden Hind' discovered in loft!
« on: February 23, 2007, 09:01:10 pm »

Ayup,
I just moved into a new house and found, amongst other things, an old Airfix plastic model kit for The Golden Hind. It looks ok & complete, although the box is a little battered. It says 1977 on the side of the box, which is about 18in x about 10in.
Does anyone want it?, Or does anyone know anyone who might?  Or even know whether it's what it would be worth? A fiver? Tenner?  Just postage? Nothing?
I know there are Airfix collectors so I thought I'd ask on here before putting it on Ebay, it's a like a little bit of model boating history!
Feel free to PM me or email me or something with any advice!
Thanks everyone.

Can you put up a picture of it please.

My reason for asking is to be reminded what it looked like.    This was the first boat I built, all those years ago.  It was was put in 'Pride of place' in the window at the top of the stairs.

Unfortunately it was knocked over one day and cascaded all the way down to the bottom , and I've never seen so many bits.  (still a talking point in our house  :(  )

I just found this similar model up for auction on eBay. It's the same range.  This one looks in better nick than mine though.
I can't really host any photos, I haven't got my computer set up at home yet so I can't host them onto Photobucket or anything (I'm at work at the moment).

Yes.  Thats the one.  I remember painting the rear window section 'all clever like'.  It's quite a time consuming model and looks great on display.  Thanks for that.

Here is the Golden Hind,  followed by the Mayflower.

Being converted to Tugs now, they look similar to me

I remember back in the fifties, there used to be a full size Golden Hind replica beside Southend Pier. Can't remember what it cost to look round, but it had wax work figures of sailors etc going about their daily work.
Then one day it was gone, wonder where it went.

Hi Bob, it was still there in the 70s, I remember going around it when I was young on holiday, not sure if its still there, but, both ships have been rebuilt as new and are now sea going, but, I don't know where they are and who owns them. Goldy was a man'o'war and Mayflower was a merchant ship if memory serves. Same ish hull etc, but, what a FIND in an attick! Classic Airfix kits can attract a fortune to the right collector. A bit like Dinky stuff.

Last time I saw the replica Golden Hind it was moored in Brixham Harbour. Didn't have time to look around it, unfortunately. I think the replica Mayflower is in the States.

There certainly was a replica "Mayflower" in Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1968 when I was there. Actors in costume gave tours using what they thought was Elizabethan English !!!!

I seem to remember, more recently, a replica in the docks close to the London replica of the Globe Theatre.
