No. But I believe they were the first to do so and as a consequence the event was well established. Furness model boat club run a submarine day, as do Edinburgh Model Boat club (not sure about this year though).

I also organise the Dive-in events, which are held in swimming pools in London and Hertfordshire, although because these venues incurr hire costs, I do have to make a small charge, so these are not free of charge, although every effort is made to keep the cost low.

HI THERE im a newbie  but from what ive seen the reason they dont mix is (an this is my opinion only ) is that the subs can be easyily rammed by the surface warships an  all these model's are very exspensive an can be damaged by said reason
chris

Agree with that Chris.  My only encounters with Subs in the water has been at Glasgow when one year they were suddenly surfacing close up to the rear of my warship on collision course,at speed, and I took that to be the reason I had rudder damage that year, the rudder tubes being cracked awy from the ship hull.  The next year more responsible submariners with more experienced control of their vessels ran on the surface and then dove deep and waited till surface ships were well clear before resurfacing, and others ran with a small float marker attached to ease seeing the sub. This led to no problems whatsoever and both sets of modellers enjoyed the day.

I don't believe either surface or subsurface modellers want to damage other peoples boats /ships, the hobbies expensive enough as it is; it's just a case of either keeping them in seperate marked off areas, or better seamanship / commonsense when running together.  :-))

The problem with the pond at Norwich is that it is public so in theory there in nothing to stop little Johnny ramming a sub with his speed boat that he got for Christmas. There will of course be an area cordoned off for the sole use of the subs, like there is every year. So my point is that if Joe public will be there sailing their boats, (in a different part of the pond)then you way as well have responsible scale warship skippers there too. Better for the punters as there is more to look at and better for the club as they may get some more badly needed members.

Yours Ali.

Don't forget that there is another "National Warship & Submarine Day at Norwich on 25th September. If this isn't enough notice I don't know what is.

That the problem for me....it is only for the day {:-{
I would love to come down, but it won`t be worth the cost for only one day <:(
Now if it was a weekend show...thats a different matter ;)

Hi Guys, this is all excellent banter and some good points thrown in too!!
just why the national sub meet was cloned into a naval day beats me but I can see a distinct trend emerging
Bluntly,The Norwich club is a submariners dream venue and to sail your sub there is worth the effort and distance
however to surface vessels its just another pond thats too difficult to get to for just one days sailing
Both camps seem to think that a two day event would be more worthwhile
I did have to do a bit of goading to get peoples opinions flowing, for which, once again, I am sorry
a least the way ahead is now clearer and all your comments will be passed to the commiittee for action
With such a large pond available and a clubhouse for the usual personal needs would it be a good idea to hold a two day
event, say in august, with both subs and surface vessels in attendance

Lastly and in closing,I would like to thank all contibutors and readers for bearing with me on this topic
it has cleared up a lot of niggling doubts so far

Keep your thoughts coming guys

Completely agree Brian, a weekend meet on such a great pond would be a great attraction. A 500 miles round trip for just a few hours; sailing on one day, just can't be justified for me to come down too - and the further distance you and the lads have when coming from Glasgow doesn't bare thinking about, even when your fuel sharing with your immense fleet of naval ships in tow.  Hopefully with a bit of thought the committee can atttract modellers from further afield with a full weekend event.

Thanks Big Bri and Cloggie,I would really like to see the Norwich club host an event.the main points are, what date would suit both subs and surface vessels and what would really attract modellers to an event here.the sub guys like mid to end of August, the facilities at Norwich are,we believe, second to none.we can park our cars next to the pond and can arrange transport into Norwich and back
for shopping and sightseeing on both days ( a two day event is I think the only way to go)
would you like to have harbours, oil rigs and lighthouses in the pond to test steering skills,we can have the Royal Marines Cadet band
along to play naval marches etc and the local branches of the Royal Maines,Royal Navy and Sea Cadets would gladly attend
We can also arrange a modellers bring and buy sale.Free tea and coffee is provided and we have our own kitchen for food preparation
I will even fire up the club barbecue and do bacon butties for you
How does all this sound so far ????

The Warship guys from Scotland like nothing better than a weekend jaunt, we regularly attend shows like Birchwood, Wicksteed etc. and are even planning a trip to Europe next year.
If  there was a Norwich Sub and Warship Weekend, I`m absolutely certain there would be a few guys attending from north of the border ok2
I`ve seen your pond and it is a pretty sweet setup you have down there, I for one would definately be up for it :-))

Excellant Big Bri,Now, Would you like a sausage in your bacon banjo,Thinking about storing models overnight I can safely say that the two ground floor rooms have about 100 feet of workbenchs and thick doors, storing models in there overnight might help free up some space in the van/car/caravan for the hardy campers and would be more secure than leaving them in their transport outside hotels etc
overnight, would this be helpfull or have your guys got this covered
Please keep in touch with all ideas as I want to make sure that the club does everything it can to make the event a success and more so a regular thing on the modellers diary

Personally I have only weekend of 20/21 free in August....  {:-{and you need to bear in mind that Birchwood Convention is on 27/28th August.

This might deter many modellers due to two shows within such a short time frame. I personally shall be trying to attend the Aldeburgh Show which is assumed to be on 10 September as last year, and hit Norwich pond on the Sunday, which I believe last year was a Naval day -(until fast electrics came on in the afternoon). Pity the two couldn't be combined in my case. It would be nice to here some feedback from the Southern modellers to help you out.

Thanks for the input Cloggie,I was thinking of running this event in 2012 and thereafter.I am aware that timing is critical and do not want to compete or detract from other shows or events. If you can keep me informed of dates etc I am sure that we can all create an event that will become a regular fixture
Hope to see at Norwich after your trip to Aldeburgh

I was taking it for granted it would`nt be this year, as input from interested party`s would be needed to see if it was a viable idea.
Planning is the key to these events, I know this from personnal experience in helpng to organise the National Warship Weekend in Glasgow.
It takes a lot of time and effort to put on an event like this and I think the Admiral is doing the right thing putting out feelers for potential interest at this stage ok2

Thanks for that Big Bri,at this rate your banjo is going to get pretty full.I have organised events in the past and I am aware of all the hard work that goes with them having being a willing victim in the past I was club chairman for seven years and what you see at Norwich is the result of the committees hard work.We started with thirty members,no money,a leaky pond and a derelect clubhouse. When I resigned as chairman on health grounds we had one hundred and seventy five members, first rate facilities and cash in the bank to install a new entrance and drop off point for models. We are waiting for planning permission to further this project, should come through soon.we need to broaden our outlook and I think that warship modelling is very thin in Norfolk, hopefully with this event it might prove more popular
Keep the ideas coming,my enthusiasm is growing exponentially

Hi Guys, could all interested people please post prefered dates for the planned event
What dates are convenient for warships and submarines, this would give me a starting point to begin planning
also if I bought 20 pounds of bacon next year it probably would not be edible by the time of the event

I think that you may have to call it something else other than a warship day. It needs to be specific to submarines to get a good submarine turn out.
I would say that  the present date in May is quite good with no other submarine event clashes. Early in the season is probably good for modellers with "cabin fever"!
I think that a one day event is preferable to a weekend but I suggest that you take the majority view.
Don't forget to publicise the event a lot in the "Submarine" section on this Forum.
Good luck with the event in 2012. It has always been very enjoyable and worth travelling a long way for.

Simple solution. Just reinstate the original 'National Submarine Day' in August for a single day, make it two if you prefer, perhaps the Saturday could be more of an informal fun run.

The original event was succesful, so why fiddle with something that worked? Reminds me of when the Post Office changed their name to Consignia, wasted millions changing a brand name that many companies would kill for to one that most people thought was a cheap aftershave!

Also, the warships theme. Although many subs are military based, many aren't. A lot of people like to build civilian or fantasy/sci-fi craft.

Keep it simple and try and drag the pond to get rid of weed- it did seem to be a problem there when I attended a couple of years ago.

Thanks so much for the input regarding Norwich Model Boat Club.  I would like to introduce myself as I have only just joined the site, I mainly use Model Warships UK which is where we promoted the Event in more detail. The event was also announced in the local press and radio station.   I joined the Club in 2008 and I was recently appointed as Vice-Chairman of NMBC in November 2010, all events for the 2011 Regatta list were agreed following the AGM by committee members.  It's great to have as much input from interested parties regarding the 2012 regatta list.  Please tell us what you would like, we welcome your support and attendance to this fantastic pond in Norwich.  As soon as the AGM in November this year has been held, we will give ample notice of the events agreed for 2012 in order for you all to plan your diaries.  We all have busy schedules and I know that planning is the key!

In the last 6 months I have been heavily involved in trying to take the Club forward, with a positive view and approach to all Club members and the general public.  We have been in contact via phone, email and in person with the Council and English Heritage to ensure that as a Club we obtain improved access to the pond for all those who wish to sail their models. Hopefully, planning permission will be granted in the coming weeks. NMBC has been trying to gain easier access from the Council for the past 15 years, thankfully, with more resilience than ever, we may now be getting permission to do so at last!

I am passionate about this Club, and I am working hard to ensure that we enthuse all the Club members, visitors and the general public.   We want to attract the young and old to take up a fabulous hobby that can last for many years....and bring hours of enjoyment.  I welcome all comments and ideas so please send me a PM if you wish and I promise I will respond to each and every question or idea about the Club...however off the wall your ideas may be! It's a Club I am proud to be able to be a part of and influence in a positive way.  Your suggestions will be put forward at the monthly committee meetings.

I look forward to hearing from you.....
Many Thanks,  Richard

Thanks for the welcome Yarpie and Unbuiltnautilus - Portsmouth holds a very special place for my family, my Mum & Dad lived there when Dad was in the Royal Marines - a great place.  I know Robbie who has the HMS Ocean at Portsmouth, Robbie and his wife Yvonne have made me & my wife very welcome when we have visited him - he's a really nice chap.... with some great stories and an excellent model maker.

I recognise what you have there at Portsmouth with the Galleon shows and the Pyrotechnics that go with them...second to none!  You always come highly recommended.
Keep an eye on the thread and I will keep you updated... nice to hear from you

Many thanks
