alternator/dynamo
« on: April 25, 2011, 03:36:57 pm »

hi,  is there such things as alternators/dynamos for models?  same idea as real boat engine, so when motor turns it drives a pulley on the shaft and round an alternator to charge the battery as you go along, has this been done and dos it work,
cheers

If you've got an electric boat and it worked then you would have invented perpetual motion! In fact any power generated by a dynamo would put an extra load on the motor much larger than the power generated by the dynamo and simply run the battery down more quickly.

If you have a i/c boat (as are full size vessels) you don't need a battery anyway!

Mamod used to do a belt driven dynamo for some of the static models
I seem to remember a pump house with a street light alongside it
I bet there is a steam launch out there somewhere with dynamo driven lighting!

An electric motor should act as a dynamo if driven.

Off topic interesting point.....Years ago I tied to make a generator with a lawn mower engine and a car altenator, it just stalled the engine... not enough power, I had to use a dynamo in the end.

A trawl of the Steam section on ebay should result in finding a suitable dynamo.Bing along with mamod and
Wilesco Make them. As said often used on scale Showmans Engines For the lights. John.
