Plank on frame hulls
« on: July 22, 2011, 09:26:13 am »

Hi there again I'm nearing the end of my White star build and the decoy duck should be finished by the end of next, I have been on about getting another boat for a winter project was looking at the calypso smit Nederland Clyde puffer quite a few but there's one boat that always catches my eye every time I go on line it's the billings Mary Ann I really want it but Im worried about the planking of the hull I have only ever built abs hull boats.
Will I need the billings building slip to build this boat and is the Mary Ann really a hard boat to build? I want it to take me a long time and not b a quick project hope fully some you guys have built her or built similar and can give me advice as I really want her

Plank on frame is not difficult if you take your time and work slowly and carefully.  Check and double check the planks before fitting.

The most important thing is to keep the frame and keel square with no twists or bends.

There are plenty of guides online for planking techniques:  I know of one good one but its on another website and I'm not sure if cross linking to another website is allowed

You don't need the building slip, its easy to make one with a few brackets.  I have the billings building slip and it's a good bit of kit but not really necessary if you are on a budget.  Something equally effective can be put together for a few pounds and a bit of thought.

I have a scanned 'how to' article on POF which I found very useful when building my brittany trawler. Ther are 8 pages coming to a little over 11 Mb. I will happily email them if you wish. PM me with your email address if you want them.
