Propshaft Grease
« on: October 03, 2011, 08:14:53 am »

Please pardon my ignorance of all things marine......

Having seen the early stages of the steam launch I am building my grandson has asked me to build him a springer tug and I guess it will need something to stop water ingress through the propshaft. I was wondering if I should use grease and, if so, which type of grease?

I am going to build the springer first as it will give us something to sail while the launch is being built.

Many thanks for any advice

Cheers

I use a mixture of Vaselene(petroleum jelly) and graphite powder, squeezed into the prop tube whilst the shaft is partly inserted into the tube and rotated..........I use a small syringe packed with the mixture to inject it into the tube, and have never used an oiling tube, and have never had a leak yet.

neil.

Lubriplate waterproof marine grease.  Not too thick, comes in a large tube, like toothpaste.  So you can stick the tube's nozzle right up to the stuffing tube and squeeze the grease in.  No syringes to clean out.  Hope you can find it on the east side of the Pond.
