SHANNON CLASS
« on: October 25, 2011, 05:15:37 pm »

Just heard that ST.IVES CORNWALL is to be the first station in the country to have the new Shannon Class Lifeboat. This will replace the present Mersey Class "The Princess Royal,Civil Service Number 41" which will be well over 20 years old, in around 2 years time. The for-runner of the Shannon, the FCB 2,was given a lot of trials in St.Ives Bay.That will be the fourth type of Lifeboat that will have been stationed there during my Lifetime, the names were (in order) "Edgar George Orlando and Eva Child", "Frank Penfold Marshall" and "The Princess Royal Civil Service Number 41". I have 1/12th scale models of all these,so I will have to increase my collection to include the new one. I hope this one will have a shorter name,as it costs me a fortune to get the names printed.I display my models around Devon and Cornwall, and so far this year I have raised almost £1900.00 for the R.N.L.I. my best ever.

And down here, we've heard it's Dungeness...so I think that all of these have to be taken with a pinch of salt.

If you look at the press release is says "one of the first" and looking at the number of times Tenby's Tamar has gone back to Poole would you want the first of a new class  :embarrassed: :embarrassed:

It's an interesting article. I know about most of the classes of lifeboat, but am I curious as to the difference is between the Tamar and the Shannon. Is it only the waterjet propulsion thats new?

No, many things indeed are new.....in fact the whole boat is totally new, even the hull shape is supprisingly different to the prototype that was on test a couple of years ago and which was abandoned because the crew didn't feel safe using it after preliminary  testing of the design. It had to be thoroughly revamped.

Mind you it's not the first time that water jet drive has been used on an  RNLI lifeboat
The first time was in 1896 when the first steam powered water jet drive boat was used.
then in the latter stages of the last century they tried with the Medina class but wasn't too much of a success.
Latterly since 2001 the E class boats stationed on the Thames have been water jet drive.

the concept isn't new by any way, just the development of the new Shannon class boat.

Thanks for enlightening me Neil. Next time I need any info, I will be sure ask you. Just a thought, building a model of this will be a lot different to our present lifeboats, if and when a model comes on the market.

Speedline Models are on about bringing out one when the design is finalised. Though production of a totally new kit would take some considerable time. The best option in the short term I think would be to modify the Models By Design 'jet drive rescue boat'. Dave.  :-))

She's going to be called "Frederick William Plaxton"

Really fancy having a go at building one.

The R.N.L.I. have announced that the Shannon for Dungeness will be called 'The Morrell' after a woman who donated a legacy of approx £6million for use at Dungeness (if memory serves)

Grandmother went to Dungeness recently, so she started chatting about the Shannon to the mechanic. When she mentioned the name, he replied, "So that's what she's called". You'd think they would be told these things first  :-)

Andrew

Oh - and from what the R.N.L.I. have said 13-01 will definitely be in the relief fleet. 13-02 is currently under construction.
