Seaplane Tender Pinnace
« on: November 14, 2011, 09:12:42 am »

Hi, Have any members any pictures , information or own perhaps one of these RAF boats?
I believe plans are available to make from scratch - that may be the only way to get to own and
sail one of them. Very few appear for sale.
There is an artist who has painted one with a Sunderland Seaplane taking off alongside it - super.
How easy would it be to build from scratch?
Thanks.

Hi Pete,

I am just building two at the moment..see here   http://rcmb.forumotion.com/t133-ambulance-launch-flying-christine

I have just passed the moulds for the GRP hull and superstructure on to Steve Tranter of Model boat Bits (see a link in Traders section)
If you fancy a build he can supply either wooden parts for a wooden boat or grp and wooden parts for a grp build.
Plans are available from My hobby store.

It's been made to 1:12 scale.

and here's a pic or two of the grp model.... at 35.5 inches long, a nice size to put into the back seat of the car, and relatively easy to build.

Hello Neil,
I have to say- thats a fantastic amount of information - what more could I want - thank you.

What a super looking boat you have there.
I haven't given a lot of thought to making with a GRP hull. Is there much difference in cost to wooden?

I have taken the opportunity just now, to contact Steve regarding cutting the items for a wooden hull Seaplane Tender,
which I guess would be identical to the boat pictures you posted.
I can't see myself cutting those elaborate shapes from a paper plan?

Incidentally, the Pinnace is a slightly different boat shape but did the same work for the RAF. Have you seen one?
Pete.

I don't recall seeing a pinnace, Pete.
the painted boat is actually all wood.....diagonal planking on a timber frame, cut from Steve's water jet cutting.
the grp one is from a wooden plug I made specifically for takeing a grp mould.
I wouldn't have a clue as to how much Steve charges..as the model I am doing that's in paint at the mo. is going to a charity in guernsey at no cost, so Steve cut the timbers for me cost free....a true gent.

Hello Ned,
Yes, thats the Pinnace alright - although its hard to make out the cabin superstructure.

As I am a bit new to this Forum I haven't yet found out how to upload photo's so
if someone can give me easy instructions I will post a few pics of the Pinnace.
Neil has posted some great pictures of his Seaplane Tender which, if anything, is rather
more attractive than the Pinnace but, wait and see my pics to compare.
Thanks all.

Hi Pete
The Pinnace was not the best looking RAF vessel
I spent my first ten years living in one of the houses at the top of the field behind her
There were two squadrons of Sunderlands and many visiting Catalinas in those days
Every conceivable RAF watercraft to look after the 'White Ladies'

Hi Ned

Thought you would be interested that some plans of the 60ft General Purpose Pinnace are available via the MyHobbystore website for the Model Boats Magazine.  The plans are by John Pritchard and drawn to 1/24 scale.  For some good pictures and info you can contact the Small Craft Group who have published RAF Marine Craft Directorys Volume 2 60ft to 40ft vessels.
If you are interested in a GRP hull Models by Design make a 1/24 scale hull.
My Dad and I built a 1/12 scale model of GP Pinnace Mk 2 boat number 40 a few years ago and it worked out brilliantly as a working model.

Hi Ned,
Living that close to all the action must have been where you get your boat interest.
I think I have managed to upload 2 photos of an Ebay Pinnace which went by me last weekend.
Perhaps up close the Pinnace would look a lot better - 30" long  this one has fibre glass hull  -I would prefer all wood.
Regards.

Thanks Ned, busy up there at Pembroke Dock by the look of things!
I think I have seen this boat 1345 in photos whilst hunting online this weekend - it may not be pretty
but it did some serious work.
I have been in contact with a pilot who flew Sunderlands and was escorted across the bay on take off by the Pinnaces.
He is now an artist and this is his painting.
Regards.

Hi Peteg

Just for your info Pinnace No 1345 is an Air Sea Rescue Pinnace converted from ordinary General Purpose Pinnaces built by Groves and Gutteridge.
Pinnace No 67, the one in the painting, is a GP Pinnace Mk 2.

Apologies earlier I addressed my last thread to Ned not yourself but all information is correct so far.

Hello Nick,
Thank you for contacting me with that info.

You obviously have some knowledge of these craft.

It looks likely that I could build one with a GRP hull thanks to info supplied by you earlier (small designs)
Their grp hull @ 1/24 scale is £55 but I need to look into how one would build superstructure et-al onto the hull before purchasing.

I have not built from scratch before just refurbished/restored old boats.

Incidentally a print from this painting costs £70
Regards.

I have a number of photos (including some detail closeups) of ST-206 at the RAF Museum in Hendon (north London) and will post them here if anyone's interested. This is a WW2 37.5ft type and (I think) the same type as the one nhp651 is building.

"Adamcraft" made a kit of this type in the 1950s, it was a Veron/Aerokits-style plywood skin on bulkhead construction and about 3ft long. One of my current projects is restoring an old hull from this kit - it was nearly firewood when I got it (see post in the main forum a month or so ago for a couple of photos)  but with the help of aliphatic wood glue and polyester resin I've managed to get it in one piece and watertight  - though the hull exterior still needs to be sanded down (the 50-year-old paint has completely degraded) and sealed. Hopefully I'll be able to get it sailing again eventually!

(edit) Here's a thread with some information on the Adamcraft kit: http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=26800.0

Hello Edward,

I would certainly like to see a few of your pictures of the seaplane if you can post them and the Pinnace if you took any of her.
Many thanks.

I've now put the seaplane tender photos on Photobucket: LINK
Here are a couple of examples:

Not many overall photos as the location of the boat made this difficult, but there are plenty of good closeups including a couple of the cabin interior.

I also have quite a few photos of the pinnace and RTTL at Hendon and will upload these in a day or two when I get the time - I have loads of other ship photos taken over the last 5 years or so, some of vessels not very well documented online, and will also put these on Photobucket sooner or later. I never got round to putting them on my own webspace due to bandwidth/storage issues, but using Photobucket solves that problem.

Hello Mike,
Yes, it is Michael Lees work titled "With Throttles Wide Open". (At Plymouth Sound I believe).
It is a print I hope to receive at Christmas!
He piloted Sunderlands as I mentioned earlier.

I am currently building the seaplane tender 206 from the plans by J Parker obtainable from My Hobby Store. This is the first completely scratch model I have built and whilst I have had to scratch my head a few times I have as yet not encounted any major problems. I had never used glass fibre before but with patience it was not as difficult as I had feared.  My only forseeable problem now is getting the brushless motors working properly!

Hi,
I don't personally know how old Micheal is either, it was his brother that told me
that he was towed behind SeaplaneTenders on training exercises..........
An interesting history - and super painting.........

Hi ,
Attached are photos of model made by apprentices at Groves and Guttridge,
Cowes, IOW.
No 33 was the first 60ft. General Service Pinnace built for the R.A.F.
I have a set of 1/24 plans for such a boat.
The Seaplane Tender was a different boat coming in 37.5ft, 40ft., and 41.5ft.
Many of the 40ft. versions were converted in to Fire Floats.
Regards
