More Microballoons
« on: November 19, 2011, 08:42:32 pm »

One more microballoon related query. What consistency should the balloon/resin mix be. I realise the resin will thicken up, but I guess it needs to self level, like a coat of paint.
I don't want to mix in too little and loose the advantage given by the microballoons when sanding.

Terry

That's a bit of a "piece of string question"
The microbaloons are light but weak, and the resin is dense but strong, so every different mix is a combination of these

It you want a sort of "varnish" coat, you need just enough baloons to make the resisn cloudy
If you need a really "filler" material, you put in enough to make a good paste which won't slump

I think your answer (to fill the weave of a finishing glass cloth) is mix in enough to make a single-cream consistency - still brushable.  Paint or scrate it on very thin, sand and be prepared to do it again :}

Hi Andrew, thanks for the advice, very helpful. I will consult the wife regarding the "single cream consistency" {-) Actually I am building the yacht for her so maybe she can contribute to the build by doing this mix!!

Cheers, Terry.
