Grease propshaft ???
« on: April 29, 2012, 03:51:11 pm »

Hi Everyone wonder if you could advise me please ?

I have an Anatec mono boat that's used in Angling this has a Graupner 600eco motor and I think its a Graupner shaft too
now it has a thin red plastic tube that the makers sell you a  aerosol of lubricant you fit onto it and give a few squirts while the motor is turning slowly its a blue sort of colour but the tin is plain white and costs £10 plus postage
I am sure if I knew exactly what to but I could buy it cheaper but being a novice I don't have a clue ?

I DO KNOW if I forget to do it water comes in the boat  any Tips advice or recommendations would be great  thanks for reading

Hi, It could be liquid PTFE. The clever lads use it on their club 500s. Nemesis

I know I bang on about this when ever this topic comes up...........but I have to say.......My Clyde lifeboat running Loch Ness last year was the only boat not to leak water..........I used vaseline mixed with carbon powder and injected into the tubes around the shafts.......and the stub tubes were only 6" long....they were totally watertight, and I use this method on all my boats....the inner ends of the tubes are usually below waterline level as well. :-))

Hi well it needs to be an aerosol tin to be able to squirt it down the plastic tube that fits the aerosol tin ?

What colour is the spray liquid? Graphite is dark. Does the can have any indication of whats in it? I belive you said the can is plain. Surely a responsible seller would list contents as it may use a flammable propellent and have a poisonous content. Have you asked the supplier what is in it? If they are selling it id hope theyed know. John.

You were lucky, vaseline is water soluble.

I use outboard motor grease which is unaffected by water, but you may have trouble getting it into a thin red tube.

I wish someone would go through the posts and put all the posts on this subject all together because it must have come up 20 or 30 times and every time the same people put there views forward and every time they are all different and every time someone gets stroppy because they think there idea is right, pin it at the top of this section ,

Oh and put on a few drops of three in one down the oiler if you have a shaft at an angle for when you run it out of the water O0

I doubt if anyone has enough free time to do that, Peter, even though it is a good idea. I haven't noticed anyone being stroppy on this thread yet, though, people are simply making suggestions.

Cycle chain lube
come in a can with a small pipe on the nozzle and with a little length of silicone tube it can be injected into oilier tubes
has worked for me on my builds
