Custom Crew?
« on: June 17, 2012, 07:35:09 pm »

I'm getting dangerously close to taking the Nobby to the pond...under motor power anyway...for sails we must be patient.

This is the real boat (white hull) as seen last weekend:

Anyway, she needs a crew but I've built her to an eccentric scale.  For one complex reason and another (but mostly being lazy and buying a ready made hull and making it fit), she's at a scale of 1:9.3  :o {-)

I don't expect to buy anything off the shelf at that scale (although I think manufacturers lack imagination) but wondered if people knew of anybody who would make one, and possibly two, busts to that scale; preferably busts of myself and my good lady  :embarrassed:  I'd then make flexible rag-doll type bodies for them and try to get one of them holding the tiller....although the travel's enormous and I haven't figured out how to do that either....yet.

I've made some figures myself in the past but I don't think I could do the model justice at this scale and I've seen some lovely figures on this forum.....and not just the members  {-)

Cheers!

Robert.

At that scale, a 5ft 6" tall crew member would be approx 7" (180mm) tall.

Yep, and I would be almost 8" tall  :}  As per Jim, my current stunt crewman:

if you want a bash at it yourself Rob.......then a little secret that every one knows.......those figures that Dolls house manufactures use to get the heads and faces is.......they take a small round wooden or oval bead to fit the overall size of the head of the subject, and then attach this to a piece of dowel.........much longer than needed.......to the bead..........and then they sculpt the facial features using a build up of milliput to the shape of face, chin nose, etc that you need....................i have never tried it, but that's the way I would go about it if I needed to do so.

While real people are all the same scale, they do come in various sizes.
The deviation with 1:10 would be indistinguishable, but probably difficult to find.  1:12 figures should be easy, but would be of small stature which, if all the figures were the same scale might still look OK. 1:8 might be available, but would look big.  Smaller figures should be lighter, and less likely to get in the way of operational bits.
Learning to sculpt figures would be quite an achievement, and from what I have seen, is a talent that you either have or don't - I fall into the latter.
Just thinking aloud.

Yeah, that first one looks just like me...the second just like my wife and the third is the spitting image of the children. Fantastic!  {-)  I did wonder about 1:10 but I'm not going to give in to them just yet.

I had wondered about a very hi-tech solution but I haven't made it work...yet.  I found an interesting bit of free software on the webby-thing: http://www.123dapp.com/catch  You take a whole series of photos of an object from many different angles and then it builds a 3D CAD image from them.  I've tried doing it with my own head (narcissism gone wild  %%) but without success as yet.  I've now bought some coloured dots to stick on my face to help it along and need to give it another go.  Anyway, if I could get a decent CAD model then I could scale it as desired and get it 3D printed. A perfect, custom ME!  {-)

Was going to suggest 3D printing but didn't know how much you wanted to spend on a "Crew". Bernard on the steam  section showed a friends head thathad been printed but at that time it cost about £50 each.

I've been playing with the 3D stuff again.  By sticking red spots to my face I've got a much better result than before.  You can see an animated, 3D me at the link below:

Not perfect. I need to try again in flatter light and with spots on the back of my head too....fortunately the boys are keen to help.

As a side note.

My father in law and I have just ordered a Makerbot 3D printer.  The plan is to use it to prototype some obsolete and custom tractor parts before having them machined properly

If you want me to run the heads off for you as test pieces let me know.

cap maquettes in france sell 1 to 10th scale figures, these are resin and you can  choose various styles, you can also buy interchangeable heads and stuff so your crew can be varied....

they do a fairly wide range of crew, everything from  crew in knitted sweaters,  through to crew if frogmen wetsuits...and all sorts in between

only down side is postal costs from france seems abit high nowadays !!!

You could always make your own, Robert. My "Ransome" appeared after a couple of hours of work. Not to mention big smiles on my face, having saved a few £££s.  O0

(It's good enough at three feet).

I'd be interested to see the kind of quality you get from this machine.  Having worked with the product from a commercial RP machine (A Connex machine) I've frequntly been dismayed by the quality of the surface and the stability of the component.  The website give the nozzle size as 0.2mm which will probably give quite prominant "stair stepping" which usually needs to be removed.  I hope you'll post pics of the output from your machine when you get it up and running.  Introduction of a reasonable quality "DIY" RP machine would represent a quantum shift in modelmaking.

the demo prints sent to us from the seller were not too bad... there is some stepping but its easily smoothed with a bit of sandpaper.  The quality I'm told can depend a great deal on the quality of the filament
We are expecting delivery in Mid July so I'll run off some test pieces to see how they come out.
I plan to design and create a couple of servo and motor mounts first to get my eye in then I'll go from there. Thoughts are to make some seats for the huntsman.

Wether or not the quality will be good enough to sell I dont know.

Been looking at this as well
http://www.david-laserscanner.com/

using the 2 together should make for some interesting possibilities

I very tempting offer which I'll bear in mind should I ever come up with a good enough CAD model.

Yep, DIY is always an option and I've made some people before now for a 1:20 motor boat I've got.  I want, partly, to give myself the excuse to play with the technology though.  %)
