Afraid I can't make it to the mayhem do.
I use an internal probe in the boiler rather than a fitting on the water gauge. As I make all my own plant, it's easy to incorporate the probe during the build. I have one steam plant (not in a boat at present) that has a Scott boiler (not Scotch) that is only one and an eighth inch diameter and about six long. No room for a gauge glass. With no feed it lasts less than 5 minutes, but using the level control and an engine driven pump it has run for well over half an hour so things must be working OK.
