You never know what lurks in our boating lakes!
« on: July 17, 2012, 05:44:08 pm »

This sinister sight greeted the members of the Cambridge Model Boat Club at their Sunday morning sail in Cawcutts (freshwater) lake on the outskirts of Cambridge.

It isn't just a submarine with a fin, but a specially built model with the ability to dive under radio control. It is ballasted to float with just the fin above water. Make a change from Ducks and Swans etc

I'll see if I can get some photos of it out of the water. I know the fin and "body" of the shark are the hull of a Victoria yacht, but the remainder are not anything like a submarine being basically a sealed box with a weight suspended from it.

However, it may be a while before it appears again - the builder likes challenges, but then moves on so I'm not sure when he will bring it to the lake again.

I too am very interested in the details of this "model."  I want to build one, but with an orca fin.  They are much more common in Washington state waters.

Now an RC water snake would be interesting.

You have things lurikng in the park too -

Due to vandalism of electrical services, barbeques in the park are out of order.
I would have thought vandalising a Barbie in Oz was a hanging matter

Many years back at Plumpton Show, a guy turned up with an r/c Nessie, complete with illuminated red eyes and a tartan bonnet. I only ever saw it that once, but it made a refreshing change from r/c ducks, swans and geese.

I remember the Nessie, quite a scene-stealer. It would engage a child or someone in the crowd in conversation, with a speaker then wet the victim with the built-in squirter. loadsafun {-)

That sounds about right, I'd forgotten the water spray...it was brilliant, the kids loved it. I wonder if anyone has any pics of it?

Great.  So how did he build it?

Sorry - bad attack of hay fever, plus need to go to Cambridge twice this week (about 50 mile round trip) for hospital so I didn't go sailing on Sunday therefore no pics of the construction. Will try again next Sunday.

Hi Tassie48,
They didn't get the BBQ or clubhouse, It looks like they wrapped a rope around the cables coming out of the bottom of the main electrical panel for the whole park then used a car to rip them out. Hope you get better soon, your always welcome to visit, Did you see the Ticonderoga hull hit the water a couple of weeks ago?.

Sydney is still a few weeks from initial sea trials, Never got back to you about the CCP :embarrassed:

Cheers

A couple of photos of it out of the water.

In front you will see his skeleton powered rowboat. Apologies for the picture quality - taken with my new phone which I have not yet got sorted %)

As you will gather, he doesn't build the obvious!

Now that's something I could take a fancy too, Barrie...do you have any construction details of it? Or could you get some, please?

Sorry Rich, but its made from odds and ends he had, plus bits he made. He was a Tool Maker by trade and has a full workshop at home. As I said, he is motivated by the challenge, then moves onto something new. The only "standard" item is the Victoria yacht hull which provided the body and fin. He did say the biggest problem was making it watertight. Also he is using a 2.4Ghz set, and so if he goes too deep too far off shore, he loses control {:-{ Obviously a 27 or 40 Mhz set would be better.

I think it uses a device which a contributor to MB made available 18 months or so ago. I believe it uses two servos, but could be wrong.

That's great Barrie, thanks for that...I've had a quick look in my cupboard and found the best part of a 575 hull, but it's bit on the small side...ideal as a test bed though. I have a small wtc, plenty of micro servos...hmm.  Ebay next stop...model yacht hulls.

Thanks Barrie,
