Lindberg PT 109 build & possible conversion
« on: December 16, 2012, 01:12:22 am »

Hello folks

I am thinking of ordering the Lindberg kit of PT 109, I wonderd if any fellow members had built this model and what they think of the kit, I note it is motorized and believe it can be converted to radio control, I would be grateful for any advice on building and if possible converting the kit to radio control, or if anyone can point me in the direction of a suitable article/feature that may help me in the above.

Thanks all the best,John.

Hi John this kit leaves a bit to be desired as far as accuracy and conversion to r/c  is concerned.
What about trying the Glen Guest plan from Model Boats plan service of the Elco pt boat just a suggestion it looks much better than  the kit you mentioned.

I've seen a couple converted, ten or more years ago, and they all made good looking boats on the water.  All had had the kit supplied motor replaced, I think they had the running gear replaced as well.  Even with the parts available back then, they performed well.
With modern lighter ESCs and batteries, and better motors and modern radio systems, the conversion should be easier and if it doesn't go faster, it should have longer run times.  It probably isn't 100% accurate, but then few kits are since most are subject to compromises here and there to enable production.  It certainly wont stand as close scrutiny as the Italeri offerings, but 20 yards out and doing a scale 40Kt, I dont think anybody would notice.

It depends on what you're looking for: the Lindberg is a pretty basic but solid PT boat hull. The fittings could be described as 'agricultural' if you know what I mean.  :-) They are simple forms. But if they're are not good enough for you, I'm sure you could make or buy better versions of the guns, etc, as 1:32 is a very common scale.

You should also expect to buy new running gear for it. I kept the original rudders in mine and used a 540 size motor off a 7.2 v battery. I was just looking for something simple.
