Fast Patrol Boat .......Vintage Model Boat Co
« on: December 30, 2012, 10:43:31 pm »

No pics were taken of the build up to this,it was built up in 22hours of work.Fit of the parts in MY opinion is very Poor and this boat should not be attempted by the inexperienced as the ins are Pathetic to say the least. >>:-( >>:-( >>:-( >>:-(

Very poor quality of plywood !!!

you will see that some of the picks have got marked that they need filler which will be done with Easy light, the side that has the poor quality plywood will also be fillered, the bow also needs remedial work and thats due to ME folks. The decks have had a 4B pencil along the deck to highlight the planking. The decks have had 2 coats of wood stain and will have 1 coat of varnish before I go any futher with the paintwork. This will follow as a guide to painting wood

Right then lets get on with the painting so a trip to Halfords was imminent to get some Paint and filler.

Filler

Filler Primer

Grey primer

Some Ford Diamond white for the cabin Roofs

So the filler was applied and allowed to Harden...took approx 10 mins

This was Rubbed down with 80 Grit Paper DRY to get the baisic shape and then finished off with 180 Grit Paper Dry

So it was now time to mask up ready to apply primer filler, the blue tape use is finne line tape made by 3m Tamyia do a similar tape,it is to prevent Paint bleed through.

Help was needed to get into tight corners so an old filler spreader was used

Primer being applied paint can in one hand Camera in another

As the primer needs rubbing down a contrastring colour has to be applied as a guide coat,I usually advocate the use of black but as I dint have any blue was used,a thin coat is all that is needed

The Cabin roof had allreadsy had 2 coats of grey so all it needed was some more

This little lot were placed in front of the fire to harden whilst i had din dins

You will notice that in one of the pice of the side of the boat that the prinmer looks FURRY this is ok as I do not use any sanding sealer at all,I will use hte primer to do the same job,all it is that it has brought up the nap of the wood annd will easily flat out and not show in the final painting.A lot of you will have picked up that there is something wrong as I have in previous postings stated that primer by it's nature is porus so what is he up to.Right before I apply yhte final grey primer I will have applied a Laquer to seal the primer filler so it will not matter is there is then grey primer applied as a colour top coat.

So down to the sanding of the primer filler this was done using 500 grit paper as shown

This is a very quick sand down and shows what looks like scratches of the rubbing down this is OK as it will soon dissapear you will know when it is right as ALL the guide coat will have dissapeared

Nearly gone

All gone and fully rubbed down

It is now time to remasak all the boat so I can apply the grey colour to the cabin sides and the cabin

As the roof of the cabin had allready been primered it was now time to give it 5 coats of white to obtain a high gloss finish

I then decided to apply 2 coats of 50/50 White spirit and varnish to the decks, tomorrow night rub down with 1000 grit then apply more varnish but at a ratio of 75/25 varnish to thinnes and then the following night a rub down with 1000 grit paper and neat varnish

as she is tonight

Well tonight it was time to mask up the cabin so the roof could be painted white to match the rear one, fine line tape was used around the edge of the roof so paint would not bleed on to the grey colour of hte cabin

The rear roof as alos rubbed down with 800 grit wet and dry WET as the finish was unnaceptable the cabin roof will also get the same treatement tomorrow night

The decks were varnished tonight with 2 coats of 75/25 varnish to thinners tommorrow they will get 2 coats of neat varnish

The interior of the boat has been hand painted with grey houshold paint even though I had allready painted it with resin...I thought it would look a bit tidier

Thats all for now folks

So it is now down to the Painting side of this Build the one you are all waiting for.......

And it was out again with the green fine line tape to protect the My varnished deck and a total mask of the boat was called for

So it was on with the painting....and NO I have not dropped a clanger at all,the paint defects on this hull are DELIBERATE just to show what can go wrong....Believe you me and I am not being big headed in saying this but boy oh boy did I have problems doing it.....couldnt get a run etc etc ....OH stop laughing you lot

Looks ever so glossy and noce doesnt it.......DONT THINK SO

Well it does look good from 60 feet away.

1 st fault a run...now We all get these and the main thing is NOT to panic

Now what do we do when we get a run...the obvious thing is to stop spraying but is this in fact the correct thing to do....Well yes and No to be truthfull with you.2 schools of thought on this.

1st School of thought ....stop spraying let it dry thouroughly and rub it down and start again,.nothing at all wrong with that

2nd School of thought well there is a run so why not carry on give it a few more coats, obviously giving it time to dry a bit, give it around 4 coats of top coat....WHY do I say this....Well think about it,Top coat by it's nature is glossy so why not use this to your advantage,The run has got to be flatted out whichever route you take. Now I will Gtee you the run will not be in the first coat but in the second or third. Now if you are VERY unlucky there is a 99% chance of flatting that run down and polishing it back up,but do we want to do this....MMM wel Not really,If you want a super dooper finish then simply rub the paint down with either 800 of 1000 grit wet dry with any washing up liquid in it and flat it down thouroughly to a dull finish and repaint it giving the hull another 3 to 4 coats....If you want to be a flash so and so LIKE ME you will repeat this a couple of times....I will show you the depth of gloss with a ruler after the different stages so you can all see.

One thing I would defo reccomend you do if you have a run is NOT to use your fingers to get rid of it BUT use  aproper sanding rubber block this will make sure it remains flat and it will not cause a dip in the paint.

Right then another problem you Might have had is little bubbles like this appear on your hull

This effect I had one heck of a job to get it to happen  {-) {-) ...Right then what causes this and what is it called....Solvent pop, cissing to name a few.

What causes it.
1....Far to many coats of paint applied in one go

2....Not allowing enough solvent flash off....In other words being to EAGER to get on with it and appling far to many coats

3....HEAT....Yes you did read it right....Heat can be a right KILLER of paint finishes.Direct heat form the sun in summer can cause it....Hull gets to hot...Paint applied very wet gasses from solvent cant escape because the top layer has dried. This effect on Mine was Caused by far to many layers of paint being applied before the previous layer had a chance to dry(flash Off)...To be honest with you I did put of 8 coats on the hull and leaving around 1 mins between them.....I then applied heat to dry it off....Knowing exactly what was going to happen and it did spectacularly with gas bubbles appearing all over the hull.

Now what do we do when this happens.....Wait for the next thrilling instalement.

Seriously, could Admin take this painting/finishing portion and list it separately under its own thread to make it easier for all to reference/find.

I am finding this very very helpfull, as I am one of thr most impatient painters there is.
can I ask you one question Dave before you go too far.
I wash my hull down with warm soapy (fairy liquid) water prior to spraying the first coats of primer and let it dry........wipe over with tack wipes and then spray.......I get small blotches size of pin heads on the surface as though grease is on the grp.....but I have washed the hull down......what causes these blotches.

Neil it is very easy to ans this.....Fairy Liquid ect is a total waste of time before painting If you go to the painting section I do mention this and I tell everyone to use PANEL WIPE, it is the only thing that will stop this happening....the reaction you are getting is Mould release wax still on your Hull.....Before even thinking of painting let alone rubbing it down it is imperrative to wash the hull down a couple of times to get rid of this wax...I couldnt care less what anyone says well it works for me IT DOES NOT lets put it another way....if Fairy liquid was good as a degreaser then all the body shops in the uk would use it....what do they use...YES you guessed it PANEL WIPE.

Sorry Neil if I sound heavy handed in singleing you out far from it so dont take offence cos we like you really

Dont panic as soon as this Boat is built I will Edit it totally and ask for it to beocome either a MAsterclass or a Sticky in the painting section....I Will be painting a similar Deans Amrine boat in the next Mnth or so and will deal with this in a similar manor and also show what goes wrong with reactions etc So bear with me and I PROMISE you a SUPER DOOPER painting article and it will be Copyrighted as well as I have in the past had some of my scribbeling appear in a Boating Mag  complete with MY spelling Mistakes and supposidly written By somebody else.

Not to worry, a boating mag wherein I read the advocating of P38, at least three times, complete with photo, is no longer on my reading list.

Well as it has snowed today and I had to close up early so it was into the shed we go.....

This is outside my shed

Right then May the remidial work commence, what we now need to do is some dammed hard work to get rid of all the Paint faults,we need to have some 800 grit wet/dry and a rubbing block. You defo need a runnder block for this as using your fingers is NO good at all.
The reason for  ablock is simple really this will enable you to get a flat finish with no bumps etc in it,it is the ONLY way to do it.Yes I do fully realsie there are curves on a hull,it will do the job.

Wet/Dry

Rubbing Block

You will see on the block there are 3 spikes these are at either end of the block this is to hold the paper on the block

The run was blocked down so it was no longer visable, the reason you see the shadows on it are simple,I used a different red underneath so it would highlight the fault for you to see

The hull was now rubbed down as the run, obviously it is very difficult to show you in ht epics how flat the paintwork is BUT you will see in hte first pic of the hull near the stern that there are dimples and if you look closely you will see shiny bits in the dimples this means there is need for more rubbing down to get rid of it otherwise it will show in the final finish.

Now you will see the hull has a flat finish and is now ready for painting

So it was Masked again to be top coated.I applied 3 coats today and will rub them down tomorrow with 1000 grit

Hello Dave,
Have found the 'Panel wipe' cleaner.
I would be most interested to know the length of the prop tube (& dia) you
used in the patrol boat as I need to get one for the exact same Patrol boat that I am
building at this time.
Thanks
Peter.

Hi Dave
Just been reading from the start. Really looking forward to your big paint article. I am a complete Dunderhead on paint and varnish. I even bought a sprayer but keep finding excuses not to use it.
