Hi Jim, I too have a disablilty which prevents me from getting out and about so I do plastic static models. I used to do models years ago and diorama sets for my lad but have just started getting into subs; just completed a static sunken U-Boat and am working on another Gato class diorama. I know that 1:72 scale Revell U-boat can be adapted into a RC model but know nothing about warship scales and what maybe suitable, folk will be on soon to point you in the right direction.

a nice one is the italiera Schnellboot at 1.35 scale which also has some nice after sale parts available in brass for the super detailing of the kit.

Have a look at the Deans Marine website to see the mini r/c gear they have developed for small plastic kits.

They have even fitted the gear into an Airfix 1/72 scale Severn Class lifeboat!

I'm registered disabled too(rheumatoid arthritis in my shoulders/arms/hands and knees, two heart attacks, and emphasemia)  so I know how you guys feels. I had to quit building subs from fibreglass, so now I concentrate on building r/c subs from plastic kits. You can convert most plastic kits one way or another, the smallest one I've done is the Trumpeter 1/144th scale Kilo, but there is the Seawolf(same scale, but a bit bigger)the new Moebius Skipjack(I have one of those on the slipway)and the new Bronco Type XX111 U boat, all under £100 and very convertable.

The old favourites like the Revell Type V111 U boat and the Gato are getting hard to find, but make into very nice r/c boats. Plenty to choose from if you want to go underwater...

When looking at model boats, the cost of the kit is just the start.  For years, my mental costing has been "£100, then add £100 for every foot or part of foot length".  That included using a bit of thinking instead of money.  A large, but relatively undemanding Revell Snowberry when the previous run was being well discounted fitted this nicely, as did the Lindberg Trawler.  The relatively small kits might well cost more than you think to fit out - if you can't produce your own running gear, the costs might well escalate rapidly, well above a bigger kit that can use regular running gear.  Again, as with anything else, higher performance costs more.  A fast launch needs more power than something slower, but also needs its weight keeping down while being strong enough to handle the power.

Thats the new improved version of the one I mentioned.  Increased price, but for the improvements, still a bargain.  One of the easiest to convert to R/C.
