FISHERMAN DIORAMA-MAKING SOME TO SELL.
« on: August 23, 2013, 05:05:29 pm »

As some of you know I made my fisherman diorama http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,44366.0.html for a bit of fun and it worked well. I have decided to make three with different fishermen doing different things to sell.

One will be sorting a rope, one will be sat mending a net and one will be just looking down. The general theme will be the same as the original all on a jetty that is gnarled and worn. They will be housed on MDF plaques to keep costs down. Not sure on price at the moment but think they will be around the £20-£25 mark, seems a lot but they will hand made, painted etc so after material costs has been taken off I am taking home, as it where, around a tenner for 2 days work-so not really making loads on these even at minimum wage.

Going to put one on ebay and see how it goes and the other two will probably go to my boat club. If they sell okay and folk like them then I may make some more, depending on my disability. I am waiting for the fishermen to arrive and work will begin in a couple of weeks, looking forward to it.

Good luck withe the project Si.
You should find a few buyers out there.
You are selling a Quality product.
Just beware of the dwp spies out there.

I will Ned, like I said going to do it in stages when I can and then sell on. It is a hobby more than going to a business, probably won't make any more after these three but they keep my hands working, painful as they are so DWP can stuff it, my disability means I struggle at what I like to do, had to give my crossing job up and haven't sailed a boat in months but I can potter with static models, slowly. I am grateful for the money I get and although I struggle I will always try to live a life as best I can...if making a model is a no-no and trying to re-coup a few quid and get enjoyment out of it...then what else can I do?

Hi Si.
Flea-bay now take  15%  of your sale. E--bay increased their final value fee's to an average of 9%, then PayPal which is owned by eBay is taking 5% from you on the payment transfer!  you may want to consider other selling sites.

Si,
If you are considering selling them have you considered making them of a size that you can put inside a clear plastic box and supply the box for display.

All well and good to suggest that bob but don`t think you realise that Si does this on a shoe string budget with many recycled items to create the diorama unless you have a cheap source of supply its not viable.

Ta Frank, one to bear in mind then. May look to sell privately then.

Nice idea Bob, but due to budget restraints this could be more expense, will look into into as you never know.

Thanks for your input, ideas are always welcome.

Yep, shoe string is the word lol. I try and use what I can find etc. Biggest cost so far has been the fisherman...£12.00 for three, doesn't sound a lot but there is £4 there on the model before other parts are added and my time.

Frank,
I realise that Si does his work on a budget.
I was not suggesting custom made cover but something reused but plentiful.
We are forever throwing out used packaging.
It all depends on the finished size of course.

And depends on how many thousand he is planning on producing   :} :} :} :}

I did spot them but thought they didn't look good enough for what I had in mind, saying that if they're cheap enough then I may knock some out and just plonk them on and charge £50 a pop...yeah, I know, more like a fiver. {-)

Heh heh! My wife will allow no, zero, nada models in the lounge or dining room...apart from my large RC boat...nowhere to put that yet and I am still working on it as there is not enough room in my man-cave (shed).

I have been working out costings and to be honest it looks like they're going to struggle to sell at £20 a pop. Maybe a tenner, but that just covers materials really so just going to make for fun.
