Phew...race trucks don't tow things, so that's one less problem to worry about.

So...last question of the day.

There's no way then that I can use a 2 channel pistol grip radio, is there? Just steering and throttle/brake?

NO

As an addendham  (like that word)   the switch referred to is only applicable when you fit the MFU.  It slows the main motor down by reducing power.  When a truck is connected the main motor goes onto full power.

This will not affect you with only a cab running and you'll get full power on the motor.  You'd be surprised to see the wheels spinning in any gear on take off.    {-) {-)

Posh words for a Sunday afternoon!

Ok, got that Ken, thanks for the guidance..loads of practice coming up, methinks. This is going to be fun...more controls than a full static dive sub.

I have 19 separate commands available on mine with the MFU.  I wish one of them was  'get me outta here.  I hate reversing.

Reversing an artic isn't too bad, you should try backing up a dog n' pup...that's a black art!

I haven't seen one, only the Tamiya monthly which is almost impossible to find.

As you're addicted and we have you, may I suggest another model truck site.

This is exactly the look I want to achieve with my truck...nice and simple, clean lines, and should be a reasonably easy modification to do.

I'm also advised to install the leaf springs upside down to lower the cab...does that sound about right?

Nice looking truck, I remember well being behind the wheel of one of those older Merc's, Didn't quite look as good as that though  {:-{

I have heard of a few people doing that with the springs but never tried it my self. But one of the good things about these trucks, there's nothing stopping you trying it and then lower the cab over the chassis to see, if not then whip the springs back off and turning them over?

I drove one, a real antique thing it was, for JJ Adams (remember them?)...awful thing to drive. The gearbox had a mind of it's own, and the steering left an awful lot to be desired.

I guess that reverse spring idea is worth a try, like you say, if it doesn't work out, then I can always put things back to normal.

You'll have to bring your truck over sometime Ian, I've never seen one in the flesh yet.

i think that cab has been lowered too , loking at the race specs online last night its got the wrong style of mirrors fitted , they need to be standard truck mirrors ! as forthe driving of the full sized versions ,i used to drive an old D plate 814 fitted with a beaver tail body all over the uk collecting and delivering jaguar xj40s , it never let me down once and was always a comfortable old ride , which was more than could be said for a leyland roadrunner ! jon

Following advice from Allan Shiletto via Facebook, I've ordered the metal faced ones.

That's the ones Rich, sorry I didn't answer quicker, I had to take the car for it's dreaded MOT, just to be told this will now cost you £240 to get a new ticket  :((

And to top it off I cant have it back until tomorrow as they don't have the right size tyre in stock  <*<

But anyway yes it's the metal faced ones I fitted, as it really only runs on dry tarmac.

Bad news about the car mate...I used to hate MOT time. That's why I like Motability... :-))

Bearings ordered and in the post, so I'm told...now all I need is the kit.  <:(

Thinking out loud here...if it's possible to do away with the 3 speed gearbox on the Merc 1838 and drive the rear axle direct? Judging by the picture it should be possible...or is it?

I don't think so as the motor speed would be too much.  There are other reduced transmissions but I'm not familiar with them.

Best advice is to ask on the truck clubs.

Cheers
