Some  photos I took with a natural light setting on the camera, a flash destroys details I find. . .

THE very nice Queen Mary . . .

And (soon to be Chinese RAZOR BLADES)  a fine Q E 2 . . .

A real old timer , 1936 build , model in Union Castle colours Sterling Castle . . .

Looks to be tinplate , with the thickness of coamings etc . . .

I've no idea what all the gubbins at the back is . . . .

Bill Had a look at the old boat If memory serves me right it has been built out of tin plate and was also one of the first proper radio controlled boats

I am saddened by both these parallel threads.  I am a model boat enthusiast, although we seem to be in declining numbers.  How am I going to fairly evaluate which shows are the best to visit, especially when this one may involve almost 500 miles return trip, when accounts of this show appear to be swamped with hostile postings.

I had hoped to see loads of photos, perhaps a list of suppliers who had taken the time and trouble, and some of the most unusual and interesting things on display.  eg: Are shows around a lake, or in a hall with a paddling pool?

IMO Wicksteed is great.  I love Deans Open Days, Alford is also good.  Sad that Beale Park has died, that was good too. My own club run an excellent Open Day at Black Park.  I like meeting up with old friends, meeting new friends, and seeing a wealth of interesting shipping that does not sail locally.

Is this too much to hope for?  As enthusiasts we should support each other, and especially support the suppliers without whom our builds would be tough to complete.   :}

It does seem that there are perhaps too many exclusively model boat shows. A 'good' one probably needs a couple of hundred models to be worthwhile and a decent area of water to play on - animation is vital in any exhibition.
For example the Ellesmere Port show seems to fill the bill quite well.
Perhaps there should be a condensation of shows to maybe three a year, one north, one midlands, one south. The boat groupies can drive hundreds of miles to all three, the saner ones just do the one closest.

I come to this conclusion as I was a railway modeller in the past and visited (and still do) many model railway exhibitions. There are dozens of these all round the country every month, but in contrast to boats a reasonable exhibition can be made with just a dozen or so layouts, since most train layouts are animated, and 5-10 traders, so it works.

And to those who say it's a place to meet acquaintances, etc - WRONG. That's a social event, not a public exhibition. (But I was brought up with the principle that if the host/hostess of a party was enjoying themselves, it probably wasn't a very good party.)

Condensing the shows, Well that will just never happen, some are run by Commercial organisations who will only reduce if not Viable, a good example of that was the short lived Northwest show in Manchester, this started about 3 years ago and was set for the same date as the Ellesmere port show in full knowledge that there was already an established show happening, albeit was not just a  Boat show, this lasted 2 years and then was taken off the list.
There will always be clashes, but as you say pick the ones you want to go to and that's that.

Yes they are public exhibitions I have been to some where no one talks to you Boring !!, However all the Boat shows I have visited I would say are also extensions of big family get togethers and socialising is compulsory. :-))

One of the most depressing weekends I've ever spent. Show was mercifully killed off, despite ridiculous prices (e.g. £400 asked for a mains electricity connection) because it didn't make a profit. I particularly didn't enjoy having to carry everything from the stand piecemeal on a round trip of half a mile to the car park. On the last of five such trips some herbert in a high-viz said to me "Oh, they've opened up the main car park to traders now - you can move down there to finish loading".

I tried valiantly, but looks don't kill. I drove away idly dreaming of the Norbreck.................

I've got to say that many of the models WERE the same as previous years. The whole show lacked enthusiasm, the lighting dull, the traders were thin on the ground and the toilets still had their own distinct aroma. And just to be picky when entering the show all i received was a stamp on my hand but no free ticket. Roll on Ellesmere Port, cheaper entrance fee, better lighting, more clubs, more traders and sweet smelling toilets. I await the criticism of my comments!

Well , I'll come up with something original . . . anyone notice how few KID'S there were (Saturday anyway) there's were the decline in shows is coming from . . . not just model boats , it's across the board, all kind's of events are in terminal decline , our 'humble' servants have decided that there will be no practical skill's taught at schools any more . . .I think we will be the last generation indulging in 'making' things . . .
Also the INTERNET has scuppered 'show specials' the price of materials / kit's etc is little different at a show these days than what you can buy on the internet (can be post free too ) it must be expensive for a trader to haul their stuff around / book a table etc . . . I used to try to aim at spending enough cash at an event to offset entry fees / some of the fuel cost and I just cant do it now . . . .

Well Bill myself and my two kids ( 13 and15 ) turned up on the Saturday and they ran there two boats on the indoor pool. I asked the lady running the pool for permission ( radio clashes etc ) as nothing was running at the time . They were well chuffed but had to get them out shortly due ' The Lifeboats '   coming on. After ' The Lifeboats' had been on nothing much using the pool ( again ). Bit weird really, loads of boats about but a bit reluctant to get them wet?  In the afternoon A fire boat and a paddle steamer were seen running in the pool. On the Sunday i had to nip back ( i am local ) to exchange some faulty items i had bought ( got it sorted ) and noticed ' the lifeboats ' were  out again and as  i left afterwards in the pool was the same fire boat and paddle steamer. All  a bit weird but as a family we all did enjoy the show. I allso did notice the lack of kids at the show, however my eldest is allso into model railways ( oo gauge dcc sound ) and at 14 built with the help of me a small model railway ( Robins Lane ),  got 3rd prize in the Hornby magazine  and exhibited it at a local model railway show. My two boys have a working steam traction engine, like Airfix kits, Lego, model railways and of course model boats but is my family the exception??????????        Regards, Dave

Hello

I believe to know about what I speak: I am the creator of GAZOULAND and the organizer of GAZOULAND during 6 years. I stepped down(put the hand) two years ago to a man younger and more dynamic than me.
I am also one of the creators of the French forum " the friends at first "(." les copains d'abord ") I am one of administrators .

All this with the example of MAYHEM

I notice that in UK it is as in France: it are the ones who do not move the ass of their chair which criticize most.
Not enough models new! Who makes a model a year?
No animation? Have they navigated?
Toilet smell bad! When they go for a pee make they inside or close by? Make they pour the water ?

The shows are going to disappear, not because the laws are very binding, but because grouches who have never done something other than grumble will have destroyed the reputation of these shows.
I pity these losers(poor guys) who were born by grumbling and who will die by grumbling. Sad life ..............
I made seven exhibitions in UK, I saw several times the same boats but I also saw people who became friends. I have not ever regretted 3000km or money spent on coming from the middle of France? I have memories(souvenirs) height the head.

In France it is as in UK: we always wait to see the faultfinders in the work.

Good day to all, good luck to the organizers

just a question to anyone who complains about any show, what will you do when we don't bother putting on these shows for you? me and john both have wanted to say sod it we won't bother but the fact is what will we all do without them? yes we don't get it right all the time but at least we are helping our traders (which is why we put on Ellesmere port on) and our hobby. without us Muppets doing these shows our hobby will go into decline much sooner me thinks
just my opinion well done to anyone who even tries to help we are all getting on a bit
