Paper Models
« on: November 20, 2014, 08:56:32 pm »

Hi,
 Is any one able to tell me if these paper model kits have enough info to use to draw a set of hull lines.The kit in thinking of is on ebay  by Oriel models and is a 1:200 scale model of the White star SS Nomadic.As the original is in Belfast being restored i thought it would make a change from the usual i build.As far as i know there is no plans of this ship available as H&W are very cagey about releasing plans >:-o .
Any advice is most welcome.

So long as the card model is a 'full hull' version, as opposed to waterline, then I see no reason why you cannot use the card hull frames as templates to produce wooden or plastic versions to create a plank on frame model.

Just allow for the thickness of your hull skinning as card is so much thinner than the wood you would use.

Looking at the ebay listing - photograph 5 shows the instructions and there is an excellent diagram showing how to build up the inner skeleton structure.
Transfer these shapes to wood - after enlarging them to the scale you want first - and as said above take off the outer edge sufficient material to allow for the hull skin, then build the structure as per the card kit.

It's certainly a good place to start.  I do this from models and further research.

What you need to do is calculate the multiplication factor to decimal places and transfer to your new plans.  You can't go wrong for nine quid.    :}

I've messed around with  this idea and once you've got your card model you can scan the hull formers and enlarge them in the computer and get your local print shop to print them out!  Ready made hull formers and you don't even need to damge the original card model.  You will have to cut some of the formers about to leave space for the "gubbin's"

I am currently building a 1:100 model of the Japanese battleship Fuso. I used the card kit by Halinski models, scaled up from 1:200, as the basis of the hull and much else. Depends on the accuracy and quality of the draughtsmanship of the card kit I suppose. Fuso is CAD and seems fairly accurate to me. What really impressed me was that I could dry assemble the hull and lift it without distortion.
