Congratulations Corporal Nick
« on: December 13, 2014, 03:51:08 pm »

Discovered earlier today, at the Dean's Marine Outlet Centre opening event, that Nick B (raf launches) has been promoted to Corporal.  I am sure all Mayhemers will join me in congratulating Nick on this achievement and in wishing him every success in the next stage of his Royal Air Force career.

Well deserved and well done Nick !!   :-))

Many congratulations Nick.  The RAF have concluded you must be as good at fixing their kit as you are with scale ones.  Great to see you at Deans today.

Right you 'orrible lot! Left  right left right! {-)

Thank you all for your thanks and support, needless to say I was rather shocked to be made a NCO or to those not in the know 'Non-Commissioned Officer', so Martin, nobody salutes me and I still have to salute officers first!

To those who have been through the process will know how the Senior NCOs and officers like to play games on the potential junior NCOs by telling you that you are in trouble and you need to report to the Boss's office NOW! Double quick no waiting move! Needless to say your mind is racing trying to think what you've done to deserve a visit to the boss. A knock on his door, he tells you to come in and close the door- usually more in mud- where he precedes to tear a strip off you for being incorrectly dressed and he has a letter from the Station management about me, and he doesn't know what he is going to do about it and do I have anything to say in my defence! Obviously blind panic breaks out and you try your best not to show it mumbling some words about that it's nothing to do with me, when he looks up and says well it does...
Congratulations you've been promoted!
I almost did a double take and mumbled in a rather shocked voice, thank you sir! All he did was smile and said sorry for the subterfuge and would I keep quiet until everybody else had been through the same game!

Don't know where I'm going, all I know is that I'm not staying where I'm currently working.

Great to see you promoted Nick, what rank are you now. I spent 9 years As a penguin made it to corporal tech MT Technician. I qualified as a Senior Tech ( up side down sergeant stripes) but did not stay long enough to wear it, Canada was calling & I wanted to travel the world, no one told me the cost. I hope the promotion is good for you & more pay into the bargain, Cheers, Mick B.

 ;)   congratulations Nick.........but just watch your P's & Q's.........

I once had to appear before Rear Admiral Nigel Berlin RAN  :police: ....on a charge of discrimination and verbal abuse against a Garden Island worker [union delegate]

In a fleeting moment of danger within a live GMLS13 missile launcher magazine <*< in my role as a supervising officer in the D of D...I swore at the said union delegate ...in fact I called him an expletive expletive!
This then caused 2400 GID workers to go on strike for 48 hours in protest of supervisory verbal abuse  >>:-(

In my apology scripted by senior management ;)  I was required to apologise to the union delegate in front of RADM Berlin, the General Manager of GID, the Combined Union Shop Committee Delegates & the Group Engineer for Weapons........ ...not for using the expletive! ........not or suggesting he was lazy....but simply for implying he was fatherless  O0 .... J-P
There are several Non-Commissioned Officer grades above Corporal in the RAF. Above that there are eleven Officer ranks from Pilot Officer to Marshal of the Royal Air Force. The RAF doesn't have the rank of General. I think it safe to say that Nick has quite a way to go before those matters would cause him to lose him sleep! http://www.raf.mod.uk/organisation/ranks.cfm
Well done, Nick.

Thanks everyone

Not long now to wait for the two chevrons to appear officially- or so I've been told!- end of January I'll be telling lads that are currently my rank what to do!
My current rank is a bit of an enigma because most people have never heard of it, the closest known rank that most members on here will recognise is Junior Technician or JT. But this rank ceased to exist about ten years ago as promotable rank so I passed out of training as a Senior Aircraftsman (Technician) or SAC(T). We call it the 'Mercedes Benz badge' or the 'ring of power' because its an SAC badge with a ring around it- very imaginative we all thought when we received them!
As for extra pay we worked it out that it equates to an extra £1.31 a day for the first year! Doesn't sound a lot but considering we technically 'work' 24/7 its not bad.
Looking forward to the day I get the 'tapes' in my hand and my posting (still don't know where! >>:-( ).

P.S for those not in the know 'tapes' are your corporal rank slides for your epaulettes as back in the day you would have to sew your rank slides together as they were cut off a tape reel. Glad that they come sewn together these days! :-))

Hi Neil, now I remember it, I used to have a "marksman" crossed fifles badge as well which I think paid 6 pence a day extra, 2 1/2 p.  It meant that if necessary I had to carry the bren gun!

I think I was the first rifle team captain at RAF Yatesbury in 1957.  Interesting as I was the lowest of the low, AC2 U/T  Aircraftsman class 2 under training at the tme.
Oh what fun days they were!
Mind you in those days I could strike a red match with a 0.22 rifle round at 25yards.  We would put matches in a row and see how many you could light up at one go.  Highly illegal but you must not hit the match just close enough to graze it.
I think health and safety was yet to be invented.
regards Roy

Many thanks to you all, its been very strange over the last few weeks since I've been told of my promotion- especially from my Sgts, Chiefs and WO- I'm no longer 'Brown' or 'Chuckles' (my nick-name) its 'Nick'! That'll take some time to get used to! :}

Still have no idea where I'm off to but end of January (apparantly) all will become clear!

Well it's finally come- my posting I mean! :-))

I'm still at my current station just a sideways movement to the other side of the airfield but at least I'll be here for the mayhem weekend unless something happens between now and then. But at least from January 26 I will have the important bit- the pay and powers of a Corporal :-)  And 22 years of service too.
