I have a new Krick Victoria kit. The steam plant does not meet current safety regs, so I am advised as only hard soldered, plus the cabin does not appeal, ......................

My Borkum kit from Germany arrived damaged so has been sent back for refund.

So it seems an electric powered open launch will be the best solution for a first kit build, as a replacement steam plant at several hundred pounds is not on.

Any other suggestions/ possibilities / comments would be appreciated.

One of the moderators has suggested a build thread so just wondered if it would be of interest to forum members?

I've the Alexander, the smaller kit on Electric.

I did not make this, it came ready to sale, with an amount of other boats in a job lot.

Me being me, I had to try it, it's great!! Sails well and very convenient, the plan was to let it go....... still got it

You don't say where you live. If you live in the UK then there are no "safety regs" on a small steam plant like hers. There may be some club regs which you have to abide by if you are a member but if you're solo steam away. You mentioned "hard soldered", if you mean silver soldered then the boiler is ok. If soft soldered then it would not be safe.

That said, I'm sure it would be pretty easy to do and the real regs are:- if it's your boat do whatever you want.

Home is in the Taw valley. 

The boiler is not silver soldered and several members have now sent a pm saying gas, brass, not silver soldered is bad news for which I am grateful.

Your advice on electric power is appreciated and accepted, I  did have my doubts.

All considered, it can stay in the box until I can find it a good home.

Have a word with my mate Ian  (IanPAL on here) he's building a steam launch with an electric powered twin cylinder engine in it, and all the radio tucked away inside the boiler tube.


BTW, the Krick steam engine and boiler are perfectly safe to use as they are...Graham Sheppard (Mr Hunter Systems) and I built one each, and we never had any problems sailing them anywhere.

I understand that my motives to swop were really a sales advert in disguise. I understand that some complaints were made. It does not sit well with me that there is an under current on the forum when I clearly stated swop only in my advert.

Stuart you may be coming up against resistance as you are still showing as a 'Guest' poster.

 As to your engine, in post number 8 looking at that set up, if you wanted to go electric it seems fairly easy to accomplish. A LIPO or similar battery pack would fit up inside the boiler and a small motor at the bottom. Connect the motor to the actual steam piston part of the drive with a small shaft direct to the end of the crankshaft.

If you do drive the steam engine with an electric motor (and why not?), do arrange to lubricate the pistons etc from time to time.
