Hi all

Looking for my first bandsaw to aid me in this hobby and have come across the following one in screwfix.

Just wondered what peoples opinions are.....

I have a bandsaw and find indispensable.  Go for it. you will not regret it.   :-))

if possible get a selection of blades with different pitch teeth  (from fine to rough cut)

best of luck

Thanks Ken
I have been looking at scroll saws but think I prefer the idea of a bandaw.

Yes, thats my fear, plus you get nice guides on a band saw.
and I guess its still posso le to cut curves with a bandsaw?
thanks for your help!

The thinner the band depth,  the tighter the curve that can be cut.  Take you time working the timber and let the blade do the work.

That's a nice looking bit of kit.  I've found the governing principle with band saws is the cost and availability of blades and the kind of blade guides that are fitted.  Some saws have block guides which wear and are tricky to adjust others have roller bearing guides which last longer.  It looks like this model has two screws which adjust in and out to guide either side of the blade. This is a method that is easier to adjust than regular blocks and cheaper to replace in the long term.
Blades seem to run at about 10.00 to 12.00 quid for 1575mm blades and look easy enough to get hold of.
I'd be happy with a bit of kit like this!

Unless you're making small jigsaws or doing marquetry go for the bandsaw every time.
Your fingers will be safe if you adopt safety whilst using it, eg. Use a block of wood to push the work through when nearing the end of the cut. I have 2 bandsaws, different blades in each so I don't
Have to slow down by changing blades over. It is a MUST in my workshop.

Ps I also have 2 scroll saws they are very seldom used.

Have a look on youtube, there are lots of tutorials on fettling the bandsaw, so that even the cheapest can perform well.

I have used Screwfix may times and found there stuff good. I have a power tool from Titan (not the band saw) and it is good .Ok not top quality but it has never let me down and does the job well .
The Titan range is a lot cheaper than some other makes, and the more expensive makes  might be  better quality but cost X3 times as much . If you are not using day in day out were you need top quality then go for it .

Thanks all

Yes I have numerous Titan items eg vacuum cleaner in the garage/workshop etc and have been impressed so far.
The saw will only be for ply and balsa really, along with any thin timber used in any builds so I think it could be ideal tool

Now, need to persuade the wife

Bandsaw is a great piece of kit ! I also have a scroll saw and I wouldn't be without them now , both have their uses . Both of them are Proxxon and I find they are just the right size for model making and both good quality.
I had a Titan Scroll saw a few years back and got rid of it as it was rubbish , it wouldn't keep tension on the blade at all . Maybe the bandsaw is better quality.
I try to go down the middle now , not the cheapest but not the top end either and just try and buy once .

I have a cheep band saw from screw fix, not the Titan. A little smaller by the looks of it. Very good for the money about 7years old. The only snag they discontinued the blades. I got feed up cutting & re-joining larger blades, here is my solution.   As can be seen in the photos it a normal 2 two wheel, adding a third has enabled standard size to be fitted.

Thanks Dave. As can be seen by all the saw dust well used. Forgot to say the extra wheel has to be convex to keep the blade on , strange as it might seam.

I have a three wheel bandsaw similar to the one above, made by Record (just a generic with a company name slapped on ) I've had it for 20 years and most days it gets used for not only the hobby but diy stuff as well. I've also got a scroll saw, bought two years ago and it never gets used, just a white elephant really. For the reason Ken gave above, I spent a whole day cutting scraps of timber and ply and plastic, even though I took time to set blade tension correctly I could never get it to follow cut lines ever!

As to blades, all you need to know is the length of the blade, then you can get them in a variety of tooth per inch and for cutting timber, ferrous and non ferrous metals and plastics from companies such as http://uk.rs-online.com/web/  You can order online and delivery in 24 - 48 hours.

EDIT: I've just seen the homemade 3 wheel adaptation of a 2 wheel bandsaw above  :} mine is the same shape but the casing is actually a casting not sheet steel pop riveted into place %)

Looks like a copy of the Burgess band saw even to the shape of the yellow attachment thingybobs, for the want of a better word.

Decisions, decisions!

I've been considering scroll and bandsaws as well and have come down on the side of a scroll saw because of the bigger throat and assuming it is quicker and easier to disconnect the blade for when doing internal cuts.

Been looking at Proxxon and initially the DS 230/E due to its variable speed but reviews criticise the fiddly blade holding.

So am now considering the more expensive 2 speed DS 460.

But reading this thread I'm getting confused again!

I'm not too far from Nuneaton and Axminster Tool Centre so I'll see if I can arrange a demo.

I have The proxxon DS 460 and love it , reasonably quiet , easy to tension and change the blade and make a lovely clean cut . But as you say Chris  it's slightly more expensive but I feel it was well worth the extra ££ . I hope it will do me a long time .
