Old GRP Hulls
« on: June 15, 2020, 08:55:46 am »

Morning all. Just been rootling through the garage looking for lost treasures, you know what it's like, you find things you'd forgotten you had. I glanced up and saw these two hulls hanging from the rafters. They must have been up there 20+ years, someone gave them to me the last time I was into boat building.
They are well grubby but look OK to use, they are both GRP and fairly solid. I have no idea what they are for, I could guess but with no degree of accuracy. The smaller one has a hand written price tag on it for £5.50!!
The larger one is 83.5cm x 33.0cm and the smaller one is 60.5cm x 17.0cm.
Question is, what boats are they the hulls for, as I have no plans or ideas what to build on them, I can't make up my mind whether to try and do something with  them or pass them on.

Hi the lower one looks like a tugboat hull maybe 1:48 scale?  The other is probably to a larger scale could be lots of options though.

Smaller one is definately a tug -lots of opportunities to go semi-scale modelling there!

Bigger hull I'm not so sure about, it has bilge keels moulded in, not sure whether it's supposed to represent somethig big or smaller-scale.  It looks like it might make a nice day-boat / charter fishing boat but I don't think that's what it was made for.  It could make a steamer also but it's not taylored to those classic lines per se.

Yes, I thinking on the lines of a tug too, so that may be the next project on the slip. I did a bit of maths and compared it with the Cervia measurements and it works out at about 1/51.

So I might get hold of a set of 1/48 Cervia or Foremost plans and ad-lib from there.
In an ideal world I could do with a set of 1/48 tug plans for an original of about 85ft long but I really can't be that fussy to just use up an old hull.
